You must not know my position in the situation. If you did you would know why I go hard for FABBY.

G.Archer
If your position in the situation leads to a skewed or biased opinion based on friendships or professional ties...why should one REALLY listen to you about this one? You would never say Fab took a L in a battle, because that wouldn't be in your camps best interest. I personally am not the biggest fan of fab, but I respect his grind. The dude be on his James Brown shit. His like-ability makes people see past some of the shitty music (although as of late he has seemed to show some growth) he has made in his career. I think Fab is a decent rapper at best, but his pesonality off the mic makes people fuck with him. Locksmith is a beast on the mic and he makes commercial knock, but he is kinda private (you rairly see dude or hear him or LEFT doing features). Lock (and the Frontline as whole) has the shit to reallly make it big the industry...they just need the exposure. FAB has what it takes too, he just needs the talent/ music that can really work outside of the Bay. With that said...this thread made me revisit that old battle and LOCK beat FAB no matter how you slice it.

Federation and KEAK actually made better "hyphy" music in my opinion. But the FEDS had alot to do with Ric Roc production.
yeah, ill give it to keak, but fed, a couple cool singles and thats it...nobody can sit thru a whole federation album, espically goldie, he just does way too much

I remember hearing that battle Locksmith was way over Fabs head he's a different monster more of a technician different game I'd rather see Locksmith battle Eminem on some real shit that was my feeling than and still is now. I agree we need to bring that back let these hungry MC's gas each other somebody will come out on top. The MC's KMEL put on back than haven't faired that bad they all still relavant to a degree Big Von gave people a shot patience is a mutha fucka . Nothing happenbs overnight last I heard Cyde Carson was on a worldwide tour shit is starting to click just got to stick with it ..

Im always late to the party.....

A little Birdy once told me that they witnessed Lock writing his battle lyrics for a couple of them KMEL battles..Now, I wont say which battles but I will say that I was there personally when he spit them. Does it matter? Not really. Theres been an ongoing debate on whats freestyle and whats not, whats proper rap battle preparation and whats not. Fact is, having punchlines ready to go off is all good but writing your entire 60 seconds of "freestyle lyrics" is whack. Does a rap battle always prove who the better rapper is or who sells more untis? No. But that's not the point of a rap battle. Its a competition like any other. And the rules behind the competition should be followed. However, from personal experience, Vons (kmel) rules allowed Locksmith to write his rhymes. In fact, Rappers competing against Lock were told that they should also write their rhymes. It is what it is....But Im tellin u, If you told Lock the battle was gonna be 2 rounds then he would be Dope as fuck...Lock in the fourth round would be out of writtens and stumbling. Rap Battles aint what they used to be but as long as the rules r known from the beginning then its all good.

Why do you say that. I am a realist and I know LOCK beat FAB in that KMEL battle with the written all we said is that, that was not part of the game or battle. It started off as a freestyle battle meaning off the top of your head. You see FAB is the only person on the BATTLES that did not know who he would battle after he won. There were lots of emcees trying to get on and be apart of the battle. So each week VON would pick someone to battle the winner. This was not a public discussion. This was a great time for BAY AREA music. Also check your memorybanks We were the first people to bring FRONTLINE, BALANCE, THE TEAM to KMEL when we first won. We thought that it would be dope if VON let everyone spit. He was not with that and the only reason that happened is because we won and were able to play any song we want. We chose to put others on. Who else does this. But back to the reason why I originaly responded. "SOMETIMES YOU GOT LOOSE IN ORDER TO TRY AND WIN" "WITH OUT ADVERSITY WE WOULD NOT UNDERSTAND PROSPERITY"

mad props to fab if he actually coming off top on everything he says he is; from experience that shit is hard, especially if a camera or mic is in your face, it really changes how you approach a freestyle or battle compared to if you jus lit or drunk fucking around wit ur boys. but in my honest opinion, i feel like lock is the better lyrcist either way; he comes hard as FUCK on his verses. I dont see anyone else in the bay coming as complex or as intricate with their lines as lock do in the bay, and i think its a good look for us. props to fab and lock doing their thing tho...keep pushin

I'm one of the biggest FAB supporters on here, but if he had a rematch with Lock, and Lock was allowed to use his pen, FAB would lose again. It aint a knock on FAB, it's just that Lock is gifted wit that shit. If anybody heard the MTV battle you would know what I mean. Lock ripped the fuck out of rainman or whatever dude name was. He lost cuz the shit was biased, but Lock is the truth wit that pen.

"You better than Lock? If I let you tell it, I'll stick my finger in your girl cooch and let you smell it." -Locksmith

When Saafir destroyed Casual, he was pretty honest about his being a mix of writtens and off the top in that he pulled a piece of paper out of his back pocket and started spittin' from it during the battle.

There were folks crying foul then too, but it didn't change the fact that Casual got schooled badly.

That said, I pretty much agrtee with what you said above.

(disclaimer: I have never heard the Locksmith/FAB battle)

Here is how Wiki defines Freestyling:
"Freestyle rap is an improvisational form of rapping, performed with few or no previously composed lyrics, which is said to reflect a direct mapping of the mental state and performing situation of the artist. It is non-scripted, non-rehearsed, uncut, and the rawest form of hip-hop. Artists will often refer to places and objects in their immediate setting. Freestyle rapping forces an individual to think on the spot, describe their surroundings, and, to a certain degree, rap uncensored from what is inside. It is similar in this sense to improvisational music or acting and draws comparisons to improvisational jazz in particular."

And THIS is why Mr. Davis is the freestyle KING- he is a master of everything mentioned. Now everyone is allowed a bad day, Fabby included- the locksmith battle was not one of his best. However, if you look at his full resume, the man has an outstanding freestyling reputation- from supernatural to royce 5'9. Fab is one of the hardest working men in the industry, not just the bay. You don't have to like his music but you have to RESPECT his grind. Now if Lock had the same grind and hunger maybe Lock wouldn't have to bring up a battle that happen YEARS ago
