Teen faces charges in LSD death
From staff and wire reports
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — A former Lincoln teen could face manslaughter charges Monday after providing a dozen hits of LSD to a woman who later died of an apparent overdose.
Cameron James Jester, 18, already has been charged with felony distribution of LSD and misdemeanor possession of psilocybin mushrooms, according to The Associated Press.
Gloria Discerni, 18, of Cottage Grove, Ore., died Friday after an apparent LSD overdose put her in a coma Tuesday night.
"It's up to the prosecutors what level of manslaughter, voluntary or involuntary," said Coeur d'Alene Police Lt. Don Jiran.
Jester attended Lincoln Southeast High School in 2002. A family member Saturday declined to comment.
According to the Spokane Spokesman-Review, Discerni and Jester, students at North Idaho College, were at a gathering of about four or five people at an apartment near campus, police said.
Records show Jester told investigators he gave the woman about 10 doses of the hallucinogen in a drink and then let her have some of his drink, which also had about the same number of droplet-sized doses. A vial was recovered from Jester when he was arrested.
Police spokeswoman Sgt. Christie Wood said Discerni had willingly drank orange juice spiked with the hallucinogenic drug.
Friends took Discerni to the hospital Tuesday night after she quickly became ill. Jester was arrested at the hospital after admitting he provided the LSD, police said.
Police are awaiting toxicology results to determine if the drug was actually LSD or if Discerni had taken any medications or had any other medical conditions which might have contributed to her death.
Discerni was taken off life support Friday at her family's request and died without regaining consciousness, police told the Spokane Spokesman-Review.
Wood said Jester expressed remorse for Discerni's violent reaction to the drug — she began vomiting and fading in and out of consciousness almost immediately, police have said — and is being held under suicide watch at the Kootenai County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
Like methamphetamine, LSD is made in batches by amateur chemists and its potency can vary widely. Wood and Jiran said they could not guess the potency of the LSD ingested at the party.
"We express sympathy to the family of our 18-year-old victim," Wood said. "We also express our sympathy to the family of Cameron Jester. This is a senseless tragedy."
