So to make a long ass story short I got my laptop back today and the person that had it decided to put in a different hard drive because the one that was in it had a virus on it...why they swapped it out for this one is beyond me because it wouldn't have been to hard to remove the virus...anyways the hard drive that they put in is password protected so when you turn on the laptop it asks for a password before it will begin booting windows...after fuckin around with it for a lil bit I realized that after three failed attempts at the password it seems to allow some access to the computer but says that the hard drive cannot be read or some shit. It does allow the option to boot from a cd tho so I booted from a linux live cd and it now allows me to use a version of linux so I can use the computer...anyways my question is does anyone know of a way to get around the password or maybe a program I can use to figure out the password while using linux? I am also able to boot up a program thats called windows xp mini version or some shit which is basically a watered down version of XP so if anyone knows of a program I can use on windows to get around the password thats possible too...hopefully I'll be able to get my old hard drive back because I know how to fix the virus on that one and then all this mess would be over with but it would be cool if I could get this hard drive figured out because its almost 100gigs bigger than the original one...any help is very much appreciated

either run from a windows cd and format the shitbox, or download hirens boot cd and try out all the password/bios password cracking tools if you are trying to keep the operating system on there.
but since this is a random hard drive that your dumb friend figured the installment of would resolve your malware problem, i am sure you dont care for what is on it, so I expect for you to have a working drive within an hour of reading this reply.

edit: also, did your friend get this new hard drive from an elementary school dumpster or something?

i was thinking that i could prolly just boot from a windows cd and reinstall but for some reason i feel like the reason the hard drive isn't being read when I try to boot it has something to do with the password on the hard drive....idk tho I don't know shit about whats going on with this dam drive dude that put it in is a super fuckin smoked tweaker so who knows wtf is going on with it....i mean it is hella weird that everytime after 3 failed attempts it gives me some privileges and im able to do some things....now i just need to come up with a windows disk and ill be able to give that a try....lol the funny thing is the original hard drive had that fbi moneypak virus so when you start the computer a screen pops up with a fbi logo and says the computer has child porn on it and if you dont pay 500 with a prepaid credit card then you are going to jail and the computer is fucked lol well when super smoker booted the computer he seen that an got all sketched out and thats the whole reason he even switched the hard drive

try removing the jumper, that should allow you to get around the password, or try "dell" for the password.
this & this.

If you are able to get into the BIOS menu, you should be able to restore the BIOS settings to factory. And since you said it ask for a password before it boots into windows means that they fucked with the BIOS setting and isnt necessarily the hard drive causing you that problem.

If you are able to open up the laptop, disconnect the hard drive and turn on the computer and see if it will post. If it still ask for a password then it is definitely your BIOS settings that you need to fix. If you aren't able to post then the fastest way to resolve your issue would be to find the CMOS battery and removing that for a good 30 seconds then putting it back in. Doing that usually resets the BIOS.

But either way i would reformat your hard drive and put a new OS just incase there is some junk on there that you don't want.
