PITTSBURG -- Police were investigating what wass believed to have been a gang-related fatal shooting that occurred Monday night in front of a Pittsburg courthouse, Pittsburg police Lt. Brian Addington said.
An officer on foot patrol heard what sounded like gunshots at about 8:25 p.m. and alerted the dispatch center.
Responding officers found 23-year-old Claudio Vasquez lying on the ground in front of the courthouse, located at 45 Civic Ave. He had been shot multiple times, Addington said.
Vasquez was transported by ambulance to Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch where he succumbed to his injuries, Addington said.
Vasquez, who is believed to have been associated with the Soreno gang, had been walking with his girlfriend on Civic Avenue when a light-colored 1990s American sedan pulled up and somebody inside began shooting at him, Addington said.
The shooter, who is believed to be associated with a rival gang, yelled some derogatory gang phrases at Vasquez while shooting him, Addington said.
A few minutes before the shooting, Vasquez had reportedly been in an argument with the suspects at the intersection of Davi and Civic avenues, Addington said.
Vasquez may have also been in an argument with the same group several days before being shot, Addington said.
Vasquez's girlfriend was not injured during the shooting.
Addington said that police were following up on some promising leads in the case today, but had not named any suspects or made any arrests.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the police department's tip line at (925) 427-7369.
