^Hopefully you have the slim version because the old version is out of production and not much in stock since x-mas just passed. I'm sure you can go to circuit city, buy a slim one if that's the version you have, take out the serial number, it's a sticker and switch it w/ your old one. I just returned mine my lady bought me. I opened the box and tore the seal and a piece of cardboard ripped. I read the reciept and it says if you opened it then you can only get store credit. So when I went to return it, they asked if it has been opened, my lady said "NO" and it was clearly opened due to the seal and piece of cardboard missing lol. They looked at the ps2 funny and took all the parts out and checked the serial number and gave me a refund! haha. If you go to circuit city to buy it, don't rip up the seal. Carefully open the package, switch the ps2's and carefully put the seal back to normal. Don't forget to switch the serial numbers, I'm sure they're stickers but I can't remember. Good luck, and if you have the can't read error it's most likely the lens is dirty, take a q-tip, dip it in rubbing alcohol, not too much if it's damp, use tp to squeeze it out the q tip. The point is just to moisten the q tip and CAREFULLY rub the lens and only the lens. That should take care of the disk error read shit.

my bad sicc...didnt see you wanted me to PM you,...but if its not the lens cleaning that is the problem.you can try adjusting the voltage of the lens described towards the bottom of this page

http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/ps2_disc_read_error.txt

if you have an older model or one that is used alot this method can usually solve those problems, and seeing that you already took apart to clean the lense you should have enough skills to accomplish this as well, not hard at all....its basiclly just two screws, one for CD and the other for DVD,just a slight turn is all that is needed, its all described in there

i have had my ps2 since day one of launch and its still running fine just by using minor procedures like this and others for upkeep

They wont check the serial number. Most stores don't care because it's not their loss, it's sony's loss for selling them a defective product. The only risk you take in doin the switch is that some stores wont refund your money anymore, they'll either give you another playstation or they'll give you a store credit.
if a store gets a broken ps2... they need to get an authorisation code to send it back, you give the technical advisor the serial number first, and then they give you the code... So DONT peel of the serial number or they wont take it back... They dont keep a log of the fuckers though, as long as it's on there you're aight.

thats if the store is run properly. if it's some cowboy shit then you'll have no problem. I've caught out plenty of fuckers that way. How do i sleep at night? LMAO.

just make sure both ps2 are of the same series. then you'll have no problem.

Those blue disks or whatever some people or complaining about... I read somewhere that you can put a few strips of tape on them to weigh them down, and it fixes the problem... I guess they probably wobble around and confuse the laser, and need to be a little heavier to get a more accurate reading.
