Clinton got the ball rolling very fast when he de-regulated the US financial system(wall street), and said the republicans pressured him into it. he made it out smelling like a rose riding the dot com boom...

the dot com boom busted while he was still in office though in 2000 and we didn't hit a recession

trillions into a useless war in Iraq and Hurricane Katrina sending gas prices from $2.20 a gallon to $3.50+ a gallon over night kind of helped shape the recession

The demand gap created by the trade deficit was filled by the housing bubble in the last decade. With the bubble now burst it can only be filled by government budget deficits until the dollar falls enough to bring trade closer to balance. Given the enormous disaster that resulted from his economic mismanagement, which could have been reversed had anyone in the Bush administration been awake.

the housing bubble shaped the recsession period. every major bank giving a bum with a less than minimum wage paying job a interest only loan on a 400k house was the major turning point... deregualtion at its finest... while CEO's at chase, fannie mae, etc are takin home millions upon millions a year. and that was the death of the middle class, now your basically either rich or poor. no in between...
