at the end of the day you can rock a show with serato just like you coulkd with dats back in the day but turntables are gonna bring out a persons true personality..theres more of a need for creativity with turntables wheras serato basically lays your gameplan out for you.
*bangs head*

Gas, with Serato, YOU USE VINYL...They're time coded vinyl records that sync with the software....the ONLY DIFFERENCE is that the songs themselves come off the hard drive and u keep the same 2, REAL VINYL RECORDS on your REAL TURNTABLES lol. Basically it's like using a record that has multiple songs on it except you're not limited to any particular amount. If I scratch and the needle skips, the song skips. If I change the pitch or stop the turntable, the song reacts the same way it would as tho I were using the record with that song on it. There isn't any "magic" that it gives you with the exception that Coma pointed out, it shows you the waveforms on the laptop screen so you can also cue by looking at the screen while u mix in the headphones.

There are plenty of vids on youtube that explain better than I can how it works. Not to mention the ones I posted showing respected turntablists using it...At the end of the day, who really gives a shit where the song itself is coming from. The same skill amount is required. The records you use are the same. The tables are the same. The mixer is the same etc etc.

But I get what you're saying about when u started. I got probably 4,000 records literally that I've collected over the years. Nice thing is now when I wanna play one, I don't risk fuckin them up at the club or wherever I'm at.

dj mark7 u got any hook-ups on a "RANE" mixer?? new or used?
thanks in advance
I got the TTM 57SL from agiprodj.com. They have super low prices that they can't advertise and are really nice guys to deal with. One thing I will warn you about that you should know before buying a Rane mixer is that if you get it from an unauthorized dealer, they won't honor the warranty if something is broke. The unauthorized dealers may be able to give you a lower price, but in the end I would rather pay the extra 50 or 100 bucks rather than have the thing go to shit and have to pay way more than that to get it fixed. agiprodj is an authorized dealer by the way.

no, i know what serato is. i was next to my homeboy using serato the whole night on saturday. but if it was the exact same, you wouldnt need it. true or false?

im not a serato hater, its just not something that id get into

for the exact same reason i draw with a pencil and pen instead of use the computer. now you can argue that wacom tablets are the same as a pencil and paper, but we both know whats up.

ive always had that oldschool punk rock DIY ethic about everything that i want my tools to be as minimal as possible. thats just my frame of mind, where quality might suffer because i want to keep it real. being that im not a professional dj or beatmaker, it just aint that serious to me.

its a 'if it aint broke dont fix it" issue for me, i guess.

i aint gon' be updatin to aim beta version 8 if aim version 3 still works good for me..

I've never got into DJing, but I must say that both Serato and Torq look dope as fuck. I get the point of what DJ Mark7 is saying. It's basically the same shit, but the difference is convience.

if i did shows, id use serato..but being that im just makin a beat cuz im a little high and bored...it complicates matters. yknow, i dont need software to make a beat or scratch. dont need forks to eat BBQ either.

technology advancement has always been an issue..
who was it, paul bunyan that raced the wood chopping machine?

someone always finds a way to make things better and you either decide to roll with the OG version or you move on to the new shit.

my dad and many other older people in my family hated on the fact that people sampled music and make it in computers instead of making it with just instruments and a vibe in the studio..

its like, during the itf/dmc battle against xmen in 1990, qbert beat juggled with one hand and one turntable. and the crowd freaked out. because he did what everyone else was doing with alot less and just skill. thats what i mean, using less as possible is my thing.
its like i understand what quanticizing is too but id rather mistakes work themselves out? i dunno. you know when bob ross fucks up a painting and makes a fucking happy tree out of it? thats what im about. i aint tryna hide flaws. if the record skips it skips, whatever happens happens..thats part of the vibe to me..wu tang didnt go in and punch in their mistakes on the first album and in a weird way i appreciate the messups.

imma like a dude freestyling over a radio outside more than in a club on stage..maybe its the b boy in me to respect a certain amount of minimalism in art. maybe its the artist in me.

edit: and thats not against anyone who uses more tools than me i can respect that. but at the end of the day you aint gonna see me run up on a wall and put up a 6 foot wheat paste poster either, imma use spraypaint and do that because thats what im about.

My boy Frank used all vinyl when he started but the shit is too expensive and he's going to be going the digital route for a lot of shit. But he's gonna be doing both probably for a while since he has a lot of the shit he uses in his sets at parties and shit on vinyl, but he's not buying vinyl at all like he used to.

He was spending at least 100 dollars a week on vinyl, and that's probably not shit compared to what a lot of people are doing.

I was in that same boat a couple years ago. Spending like half my weekly DJ income on records was less than ideal. Luckily the club I was at then was paying pretty well. I haven't bought a new record in over a year, with the exception of new serato control records. Another thing about Serato is you can still use regular vinyl with it with the flip of a switch.

Anybody ever fuck with CD-J's? The club I'm at right now has the Pioneer MK3's. They are bad ass!

I getcha Gas...

I ripped most of the vinyl I would normally play at the club to mp3 quite a while ago and now just download the digital versions. When it comes to getting samples for beats an shit I'm still a crate guy. Serato to me is strictly for the convenience factor. It doesn't mix for me or do anything like that. But now the nice thing is I can play more shit that may either not be on vinyl or can't find. If I'm having an "off night" it's still off even tho I use Serato lol.

I was actually one of the few DJs that didn't run out and buy CDJs when they came out. I could never get used to mixing with anything but vinyl. I bought a Denon just to play shit I didn't have but RARELY used it and since going to Serato I sold it. To me it's the answer to the prayers of hella DJs who's comfort zone is turntables but now I just don't hafta bring multiple crates with me when I spin.

MOREBASS I don't quite get what yer saying tho....With Serato you USE REAL VINYL...You just use the same 2 records as opposed to having to switch them. Plus there's no latency or anything like that to make it different from scratching old records etc. I know some people use serato with cdjs but thats not my thing either. I use my same DJ equipment just with 2 records and a laptop...and a back that doesn't hurt anymore from luggin crates lol.

I hear what your saying Mark, and I use Serrato myself...I'm talking more about the battle scene, and how technological advances are looked at taking away from the craft.

Like I said, its really a no brainer for any mobile DJ.

Yeah Serato doesn't completely replace vinyl, and I think everyone should still learn on vinyl, but Serato just makes it a lot easier for club and mobile gigs.

CDJs are hard for me to use lol. I can do it, but I just don't like em. And the ones that don't even spin the platter.. fuck that I'm lost when I use those lol. It just doesn't make any sense. The platter's gotta at least spin!! lol

"Digging" is part of being a DJ just ask DJ Shadow.
There are many different kinda DJs but thanks for the insight...If yer talking about producing shit like Shadow does then I agree 100%...Otherwise for club shit there is no "digging" necessary...And most turntablists these days use records MADE for that shit like the ones Qbert, Wrecktangle etc put out

Im talking about digging for the latest shit. Back in the day we didnt have the luxury of DLing shit and playing it on digital vinyl. We had to go to amoeba and look for the lastest shit. Not unless you had a record pool.

BTW, Q is a shady ass becuz my cuzzin is shortkut and told me the real reason why ISP broke up *SECRET* and if it wasnt for the Space Travelers then skratch records wouldnt exist.

yayo if Shortkut is yer cousin are you saying he's not a real DJ because he uses Serato? lol....Please explain

as far as the scratch records thing goes, there has been a loooooooong running feud as to who was the first, best and whatnot...
