The worst sports fans in the world are those who are too insecure w/ themselves that they pick an out of area time based mostly on winning. It's indicative of somebody who takes shortcuts in life, b/c it basically is nothing more than an attempt of a shortcut to winning.

We all want to root for winners, some of us look for the easy way.

^^^^I agree there isn't a rule or a fan bible saying u have to pick a team from your area..... Yea majority of fans do pick their own area's team but I'm from San Jose, NOT Oakland or Frisco. My city doesn't have its own baseball, basketball and baseball team so I CHOOSE my teams because thats who I liked growing up as a kid and have my reasons. My area has both 49ers(5 Superbowls) and Raiders(3 Superbowls and actually wipped my teams ass in one of them) which actually HAD MORE Superbowls at the time I really began watching football than the team I care and love, which is the Redskins! People have they're own beliefs and opinions so Panther has the right to do so, but I cheer and enjoy watching the Skins probably more than many Redskins fans in the Washington DC area who consider themselves Redskin fans. When my team plays here in the bay I attend the games wearing my squad's colors and jersey with pride EVEN if we're not doing well cuz I'm a Redskins fan! Everytime I attend a game or hit up a bar I'm in enemy territory while out numbered and I don't mind it, yea I hear it all but its all out of fanism and like KAH stated, I don't need to follow what others do cuz I'm my own man.......AND nor did I have a father to bring me up watching 9ers or Raiders!

I'll never understand how someone can live in a city or in surrounding area of that city with a franchise and not be a fan of that team. Makes no sense to me whatsoever, to me it says they have no pride in where they come from. Which is weak in my opinion.

Exactly.

And although I certainly understand the sentiments expressed by Fresh & Infamy, the thing is that regardless of the sport 90% of the out of area fans root for the 5 or 6 most successful/glamorous/winning franchises in their sport.

So you've got 90% picking from the top 25% completely skipping over the rest, and they're absolutely oblivious to why they do it (they say stuff like "that's who I was watching when I was a kid" but NEWS FLASH they were on TV when you were a kid b/c they were good, you think the 92 Seahawks were on TV anywhere? Hell no).

In short if in my life I'd have observed out of area fans to be every bit as likely to root for the Detroit Lions or the Arizona Cardinals or the Kansas City Royals or the Pittsburgh Pirates or the LA Clippers, then I wouldn't have a problem w/ it at all. But that's obviously nowhere near the truth, and the out of area folks on this board aren't exactly bucking the trend w/ their choices of teams.

That's why I don't respect it and won't listen to somebody taunt me for my team when they've taken shortcuts for theirs.

Exactly. But to each his own. But on the real, I just don't understand how someone doesn't support their surrounding area team. I can understand if they started likeing an out of state team if their favorite "player" is on that team, but not just because they're a winning team, that to me is an bandwagon fan, and I have no respect for bandwagon fans. For instance, I've liked the San Antonio Spurs since I was a kid, when they weren't winning. I liked them because David Robinson was one of my favorite players. When the Sonics were around, they were always #1 to me, but now they're gone, so it's just Spurs now. But in football, It has been and always will be the Seahawks. MLB, always has and always will be the Mariners. Washington State hasn't had a professional hockey team since the early 1990's. And might I add that, the Seattle Metropolitans were the very first American professional hockey team to win the Stanley Cup.

We all have different views about the situation at hand..... I see what you and Panther are getting at and I respect the comments and your opinions. On the other hand just cuz I don't cheer for the Raiders or 49ers DOESN'T mean I don't love or have pride for my city, surrounding towns in the area or for that matter, my state. I'm born and raised a Cali boy and wouldn't change that for the world it just that I represent San Jose. Yes I've been to DC once and its a very nice area, but I as my own man follow the Redskins(the team), NOT Washington DC! Just my thoughts whether u guys agree or not.
