I just graduated with a BS in Business Admin/Finance and cannot find a job. I've tried CL, Monster Jobs, and all those other job sites. I've sent a bunch of resumes out and have an interview lined up for next week. I hate trying to find a job, let alone a career. Any suggestions or career advice?

its hard in this economy. they did a segment on this on cnn and muthafuckas graduate and are either over qualified or companies just cant hire anyone at this moment. It sucks because they interviewed a bunch of graduates and its even hard for them to even get a job at a retail store.

What kind of job do you want? You're going to have to start entry level, a degree is alot more common these days and if your resume isn't seasoned good luck.

My simple advice to you is this: 80% of jobs available (or something like that) are never even posted on craigslist, the newspapers, etc. They are filled internally by references. Talk with your friends who have jobs and see what they have going on. Get out to every party or happy hour you can with working people. Don't be upfront about it "Hey can you find me a job" but if they are doing something that interests you ask them questions "what type of qualifications do you need? what are your hours like? how do you like your company?" and show interest. Exchange business cards, phone numbers, email addresses. Build a supporting cast around you to fill you in on whats going on in the business world. Networking is key to finding a good job and a career.

go get a masters degree, thats what ima do when i graduate next spring
ive been thinkin about it but im so sick of school.

it would be nice to find something in the financial services industry but i will consider anything that pays well and isnt too depressing. i have investment bank experience, so i will hopefully use that to my advantage.

Where do you live?
im in santa rosa but im willing to relocate anywhere. ive been applying to places all throughout the bay and even the phoenix area. i appreciate the advice. ive been doing a little networking but nothing has really come out of it.

MaddDogg's post pretty much explains it all. You need to network with people already connected, not temp agencies or craigslist or anything of the sort. The best place to start is with the department you graduated from. If there are any professors you got close with, go talk to them and I guarantee they will provide a better starting point than anyone or anywhere else.

its not about what paper you have, its about the way you search for a job and having a mouthpiece. if you apply online, fax only. the fax is near the bosses office if not inside of it. that way you have a direct line to the boss. i know everyones parents have told them otherwise and go to college and get degrees but there are places hiring everywhere, for equal amounts of money that a college education would get you, its just that you have to fit a certain niche. if you dont look like you deserve 30.00 an hour you will never get it, so its about playing the role first. if you take it upon yourself to educate yourself on whatever job it is, and the company, and you truly mean what you say, that shows in interviews. alot of my friends used to ask me 'man how do you get the cool ass jobs?' its because i search for them and set my goals to becoming an employee for them, i know why i want to work for them and any other question they ask me. i write a great cover lever and i work hard. that alone is worth more than paper. i dont give a fuck what certification you have. if i can prove that im better for the job than you, ill get the job. whether im a con artist or not.

my next job, ill look 25-30 an hour (i know thats not much to some of you) because i deserve it. thats my goal and ill get it.

good luck!

Dont worry man, keep your head up. At least the economy is so fucked up, it aint your fault you cant find anything. I got lucky, I graduated w/ the same degree as you right before the shit hit the fan and got a cool job downtown that pays good. Another piece of advice amongt the other great advice in this thread that I have is to check your university's job board, or any university job board for that matter.

times are tough, we had MBA's graduate in December that still dont have a job. Everyone has the right idea with networking, using your college's career center, etc.

Also, if you have any aspirations of doing it big, it will be a must for you to go back and get your MBA, but only after you have obtained 3-5 years work experience. It would be pointless to go back to school unless you get that experience first.

I have my own doubts about what job offers I will be receiving when I finished my MBA in December. I am hoping the market turns around by then, but it probably wont. I am just trying to network my ass of, and I have to do it harder because my school isnt a top ranked B-school, so I got two factors working against me. In the end, the market will correct, jobs will open up, and things will be fine. Until then, it will be an uphill battle. If you get any job offer in the industry you want to be in, regardless of money or what you would be doing, id take it and start gaining realworld experience. My suggestion - NETWORK your ass off. College career center, look up alumnis on Linkedin, do all you can. If you do that, I am sure with a degree and a solid internship, you should find something, but probably not in I-Banking.

This is what I would do. I got lucky getting my job right before the economy went to crap.

1. NETWORK
2. On campus recruiting
3. Career center at your school
4. Pray

THIS IS MY BIGGEST FEAR IN LIFE. GOING TO COLLEGE, WORK YOUR ASS OFF, GET A DEGREE, AND END UP WITH A PIECE OF SHIT 9-5 OR DOING HARD LABOR. I KNOW PEOPLE LIKE THIS, I FEEL BAD. AND RIGHT NOW, IM 25 GIVING THIS SCHOOL SHIT 1 LAST SHOT. IF THIS DOESNT WORK, THE DRUG TRADE.
