Mos Defs first album was tight as fuck and it was consience/backpack rap. but COMMON sense is garbage, that nigga needs to get laid. Consience/backpack rap is coo if they got tite beats. But the majority of the cats like to spit over simple bass and snare drums wit african drums in the back. And fuck the people who say that thats REAL hip hop, fuck you, who the hell made you the hip hop guru biatch..

its basically a matter of where your consciousness is at.

mcs who are labeled "backpack rappers" are for the most part, mcs who analyze all kinds of aspects of life (spirituality, politics, etc.) from a critical perspective. they just think about that kinda shit in their everyday lives, and when it comes to music, they like to rap, and therefore rap about these thoughts.

gangsta rappers consiousness is from a much more micro perspective. they dont stop and analyze the bigger picture of why shit is the way it is. they just deal with what they see and experience in their everyday lives, and thats what occupies most of what they think about and thus rap about.

most ppl view life from the micro perspective, which is partly why the most popualr hip hop is gangsta or party rap. it just talks about the simple shit ppl do in their everyday lives (or wish to do). i personally enjoy "backpack" rap much more. its my opinion of what good music should truly be. if bob marley or bob dylan were rappers, theyd be "backpackers". ill listen to some gangsta/party rap every once in a while, but for the most part, i dont care to hear some rapper talking about how hard he is or how much money he has

Casual does say meaningful stuff sometimes so does Doom, it is just rarely.

Nicely put. Zion-I, Souls of Mischief, Pep Love, Saafir, Casual, basically HIERO. There was this cat I've seen several times named Kev Choice. He's from Oakland, plays boards & performs with Goapele and opened for Talib Kweli when he was at Stanford University. His music is beautiful too.

So yes, please realize in the Bay we got more than the Hyphy rap going on. We represent in all catergories.
