OAKLAND — A man who dreamed of a music career was fatally shot early Monday in his West Oakland home, where three other people, including his 13-year-old son, were wounded, police said. Investigators said Jamonie Robinson, 33, was shot when he went to investigate gunfire he heard coming from the basement he had converted to a music recording studio.
Robinson's son and two men, one 23 and the other 44, were shot in the basement. Their names were not released.
Police said their injuries were not life-threatening, and all were expected to be released from hospitals by late Monday.
Police are still trying to determine a motive. Officer James Morris, who is investigating the case with Sgt. Bruce Brock, said, "It wasn't a robbery."
He did not elaborate.
The shootings happened about 12:15 a.m. at Robinson's home in the 1400 block of 34th Street, near Helen Street.
Morris said the three wounded people were found in the basement, which besides serving as a recording studio
also had video games. It was apparently a popular neighborhood gathering spot. Morris said relatives told police that Robinson "was really into music," especially rap and hip-hop, and hoped for a recording career.
"This was his dream," one relative told police.
Morris said there was at least one gunman and maybe more.
Robinson died at Highland Hospital Oakland at 7:26 a.m.
