I want to know if its possible to e-file a first time home buyers credit through turbo tax or efile or something like this. Or is this something that needs to be mailed or brought to h and r block?

Yes. Anything on your tax return can be e-filed. However you do your tax return will work.
all i know is the open forum is the best place to get accurate tax advice so you're off to a great start.
If I decide to answer, then this is true.

Yeah, you can basically do anything on those computer programs that a real life Tax "specialist" can do for you. And if Tax laws change the program will scan for an update and let you know if it has to install a patch or if you'll have to wait until their programmers update the files on whatever newest patch is to be released next.

But if you don't feel confident doing it yourself then go to the H&R people. Pretty much the same shit. Only thing you're really paying for is peace of mind.

Indrid, can you afford to pay a tax agent?

Best thing to do... personally I can't be fucked with it and will happily part with some $$ for someone else to do it.

not if I gotta pay them up front. Im hella broke right now. like, ramen noodle status. thats why Im trying to get my return as quick as possible.

but if they just deduct their cut from my return, then Id be game.

When I worked for a CPA we'd get paid after, but Turbo Tax is all you need. Very simple, even with itemizing.

hr block does free taxes if you make less than 50 a year....

but ya, they can just take the money out of your return if you have them prepare it for you.....

thats what I figured. The only reason I brought it up is cuz on the turbo tax website it said something about the form 5405 (homebuyer credit) having to be mailed and not efiled. I havent actually tried to do it yet.

thats how its normally done, but again, if you have time and can be bothered then do it yourself, especially if you are tight for cash at the moment.

I bought a house this past October and filed for my first-time home buyer tax credit on my own. I actually did an amendment to my 2008 return with Turbo Tax. Turbo Tax walked me through and I had to print out a form, fill it out, and mail it to the IRS. After about a month and half of waiting I received my tax credit, plus interest.

Do Turbo Tax. I'm pretty sure you don't pay until you're about to submit the taxes. So if the shit's not on there or you end up owing money, you can just hit up a tax professional.

H&R Block are not tax professionals though. They pretty much just input the numbers in their own version of Turbo Tax. The lady at H&R Block fucked my shit up when I first got out here. I didn't get that year's refund until I did the next year's taxes in Turbo Tax.

You will be fine if you want to go the turbo tax route, You will have to buy the higher version, but thats still cheaper then going to say an HR block as stated they just do the same shit for you but take ALL the responsibility since its thier people entering.

Either way you go turbo tax or hr block they are both fully up to date on 2009 claiming and issues and you dont pay until you are actually ready or are ready for them to hit send for the file. and in both cases if you have a refund coming you can pay out of the refund.

turbo tax for example you can have everything entered and printed today just not paid for until you hit send which could be april 13th for all they care.

If you are worried about things though its more than worth it to maybe wait a few weeks and afford an accountant or someone to do it for you. Alot know some of those behind the scene "rules" to get around that can save (refund) you a few dollars and not raise a flag for audits, espcially if you are filing with a spouse or kids or both. Shit with times the way they are you could probably find someone in your area through craigslist that will do it on the cheap just to get a few extra bucks.
