You have to be a people person (or at least pretend to be) to be a good waiter. You can be an asshole to your customers, but if you want to last (and make a good living), you need to have people want to and enjoy being in your section/area. Also, those tips may sound good, but are you being allocated on your paycheck? Like, for example, you may have a certain percentage/dollar amount taken out of each hour you work, and you may also have to tip a busser or stock person out of your own pocket each night.
You may make 100 bucks at the end of the night, but after tipping the busser and stocker, you might be left with 60. That's still obviously better than nothing, but you have to treat them well, also. They help keep things going for you, with clean dishes, cleaning your tables sometimes, etc.
Customers expect great service; put a smile on your face and be polite. Call them assholes AFTER your shift, if you have to, but people don't mind rewarding you for your time and service, and making them feel good for a short while.
I used to work in a resort casino, in the buffet, and it was nothing to avg. 5 bucks a customer, and for every 1-2 dollar tip, you'd catch a 10, if you were decent. You don't have to suck a dick to get a big tip, but you can be polite and courteous to make a good living.
One more thing, remember your regular customers, so they'll come back to you. Repeat customers are great, especially when you've developed a relationship in which they feel you're their freind rather than just some waiter in a restaurant; you'll see your tips increase and they'll send people your way.
Good luck.
