Giants Offer $1MM Contract To Edgar Renteria
By Mark Polishuk [December 10, 2010 at 10:45pm CST]

The Giants have offered Edgar Renteria a contract in the "Pat Burrell range" of one year for $1MM, reports John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle. If Renteria really does have two other options on the table, San Francisco will probably have to bump its offer up a bit, despite the mutual interest between the Giants and their 2010 World Series MVP.

As MLBTR's Ben Nicholson-Smith pointed out in the previous linked article, the Giants already have a pretty crowded infield, though Renteria could find playing time given how none of those infielders (except Freddy Sanchez) played well enough in 2010 to have firm claims on starting jobs next year. Renteria himself, of course, hit just .276/.332/.374 in 267 regular season plate appearances before catching fire in the World Series. Whereas Burrell literally took a hometown discount, Renteria could accept the smaller contract to remain with the team that has already brought him one championship ring and should contend again in 2011

Dodgers Sign Eugenio Velez
By Tim Dierkes [December 13, 2010 at 12:24pm CST]

The Dodgers signed Eugenio Velez, the team announced today. They also confirmed minor league signings of Juan Castro and J.D. Closser.

Velez, 28, was non-tendered by the Giants earlier this month even though he wasn't arbitration eligible yet. He owns a .256/.300/.388 line in 678 career plate appearances. He's logged time at all three outfield positions as well as second base. This year the speedy utility man hit .302/.353/.439 at Triple-A. Velez comes much cheaper than the other infielder the Dodgers signed away from the rival Giants, Juan Uribe.

Renteria: Giants' Offer Showed "A Lack Of Respect"
By Mark Polishuk [December 16 at 10:37pm CST]

Edgar Renteria didn't care for the Giants' recent $1MM contract offer, reports Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes. "That offer from the Giants was a lack of respect. A total disrespect," said Renteria. "To play for a million dollars, I'd rather stay with my private business and share more time with my family. Thank God I'm well off financially and my money is well invested."

Renteria had expressed his desire to retire as a Cardinal or a Marlin but there were signs that he would probably be back with the Giants next season, though this is now in doubt given Renteria's apparent disdain for their proposal. As MLBTR's Ben Nicholson-Smith pointed out, San Francisco already has several infield options on the roster and doesn't really need Renteria, so the Giants' $1MM contract might well be their final offer.

This rift between Renteria and the Giants could be good news for the Marlins, who may be interested in the reigning World Series MVP themselves. Renteria told Rojas he had received at least one other offer from another team, but this offer also wasn't to his liking.

Apparently there's some confusion because Renteria still wants to comeback to the Giants.

"By Mark Polishuk [December 17 at 7:49pm CST]

FRIDAY,7:49pm: Giants assistant GM Bobby Evans says that the club is still looking at all options for a backup shortstop, which means that they haven't given up on retaining Renteria, writes Shea. However, Evans says that there is a major inconsistency between what the veteran said yesterday and what his agent is saying today:

"Something doesn't add up when you read Renteria's quotes and yet the agent insists that Edgar has no problem with the Giants," the assistant GM said.

Pirates Designate Joe Martinez For Assignment
By Tim Dierkes [December 22 at 12:29pm CST]

The Pirates designated righty Joe Martinez for assignment to open a spot for Kevin Correia, tweets MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch. She adds that they also announced non-roster spring training invites for Tyler Yates, Jeff Clement, Rudy Owens, and Justin Wilson.

Martinez, 28 in February, was acquired by the Pirates from the Giants along with John Bowker in the trade deadline deal for Javier Lopez. He posted a 3.94 ERA, 6.8 K/9, 2.7 BB/9, and 1.0 HR/9 in 109 2/3 Triple-A innings this year. Baseball America ranked him 30th among Giants prospects heading into the '09 season. They called him "a groundball machine" with a "sinking 86-88 mph fastball, a true curveball and a plus changeup consistently down in the strike zone."

Some news from the broadcast front:

-- The Giants are very close to re-signing their two most popular free agents: the television team of Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper.

Krukow's return for a 21st season and Kuiper's for an 18th might have seemed fait accompli, but they still have not had anything on paper, and this is a pretty late date. Previously they were extended very early on, but in this case the World Series put everything on the back burner. Plus, the negotiations might have gotten a little more complex because the pair used an agent to negotiate for the first time.

But it's my understanding that contracts are being faxed and signed that would extend the K&K Boys for six more years, assuring that one of the baseball's most heralded TV teams will stay together. The length of the deals is significant. They will take Kuiper through age 66 and Krukow through 64.

A deal could be announced very shortly.

-- Jon Miller and the Giants have not yet talked about amending his contract for the extra games he would do on radio now that he is no longer ESPN's Sunday night play-by-play man. I presume they'll talk before Opening Day.

Miller's and Dave Flemming's contracts did not expire after last season.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I've got to admit, I had tears in my eyes when they won. I had tears in my eyes when they beat Philly (in the NLCS) because we had been there the last two years. I knew how tough it was. I knew what they were up against. When they beat Texas, same thing. It was a very emotional time for me." — Dodgers GM Ned Colletti on the Giants' road to the World Series. Colletti served as Giants GM Brian Sabean's right-hand man before accepting the Dodgers gig.

Reds To Sign Edgar Renteria
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 6 at 5:30pm CST]

5:30pm: Renteria confirmed that he has signed with the Reds, tweets Enrique Rojas of ESPNdeportes.com.

1:03pm: The Reds have agreed to sign Edgar Renteria, according to Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com. The deal could be worth as much as $3MM with an incentive package, according to Levine. The team could announce the agreement today. Agents Jeffrey Lane and Barry Meister represent the 2010 World Series MVP.

Earlier in the offseason, Renteria expressed interest in returning to the Marlins or Cardinals. A deal with the Reds would be a homecoming of sorts for Renteria, who played under GM Walt Jocketty from 1999-2004 while Jocketty was the St. Louis GM.

Renteria, 34, says he intends to play for two more seasons. He batted .276/.332/.374 in 267 plate appearances last year, missing time with elbow, groin, hamstring and shoulder injuries before returning to form and leading the Giants to their first championship in San Francisco.

Renteria discussed a potential return to San Francisco, even after saying that the Giants' $1MM offer showed a "lack of respect."
