i disagree with EVERYTHING the person that started this thread said. everything that the poster listed, u need money to do. especially the video and clothes....for the videos, artists do make videos, they just dont get played...for the clothes, shit, look at phat farm and roc, they both created their clothing labels at least 5 years after they became multimillioanires.

It aint about making hits

MrPeete
You seem to forget what Russell Simmons said about making hits. He saidf you can have the best songs and a big potential hit but that doesnt equal money or national recognition.

Lets face it ,clothes does make the man. For example PDiddy hasnt made an album and doesnt really know how to really rap and he is in the lime light because of Sean John clothing. Just think of the hood. If you aint in L.A and you look broke and aint driving a sick ride then you get no respect. Why fools talk about Platnium , Spinners, Escalades and Bling. Its sad but it has resorted to this level.
What does Jay Z rap about ? Does he proves he has it ?
How about Pdidy ?

If it aint clothes then is tattos , hair style or street credibility.

The radio is controlled by record companies such as Universal who give big promotions to all the stations all across the nation. Record companies have at least 10 people per region making phone calls trying to persuade the record companies. Its like a Political campaign. You can have all the creditials but if know one recognizes you then you lose voters.

As far as Universal giving deals to Bash and Jay Tee it is because they are going after the Latino Rap Market and they need the closest looking Latino that looks white. Sad But True. I talked to an executive at Universal Records.

You may say they got talent and I agree. But there is alot more talented and gifted artists than them.

some valid points, there are probably of little reasons but they all accumilate to create the biggest reason, the music just aint as good as it used to be.

as long as i dont hear artist and managers complain about "fans not adapting to the times" im straight. sorriest cop out ever.

BurnRubberz...you pretty much hit it on the head with your last 2 posts. It's about MARKETABILITY!! Russel Simmons was probably saying this...Rappers need the following in their recipe to succeed...The LOOK, the PERSONA, the TALENT, the ABILITY TO GENERATE SALES with the last 3 things mentioned!! The most talented artists in the WORLD will NEVER get a record deal, I can almost guarantee that!! Street Credentials has NOTHING to do with the business anymore. Take 50 for example, the guys first album on Shady was completely produced...you listen to his lyrics, you hear Eminem's style...then you have superstar production and millions of dollars backing him up, can't go wrong with that!!

Starting your own fashion label is not easy at all, SHAT that takes a lot of time and energy especially if you're starting with very little inyour bank account. Sean John is a big corporation P Diddy started that fashion label with millions in his bank account. Diddy had a great deal of money to hire a quality team, same with Russell Simons and Jigga, they didn't start with fashion then music it's the other way around.

I'm sure bay artists would have there own line also if they had the capital Jigga, Rusell and Diddy has. Because everyone wants to try to expand from a business standpoint somehow.

I've been saying all of this for the past couple years and people called me a hater and shit...and tried fighting me over it, LMAO!! I'll SAY IT AGAIN...Bay Rappers as of RIGHT NOW, do not have a chance unless they pack up and leave the Bay...point blank PERIOD!!
Again I gotta agree with Sydal!

I hate to say it but you know how stubborn a lot of Bay Area artists get when it comes to new ideas about leaving the sets and doing something new and original.

The way I see it, Bay Area cats now a days want to replicate the kind of scene that gave the bay distinction from the 91-93 period thinking they are going to bring it back. Well guess what.....it died with Pac and all that shit just sounds completely recycled now. I am not hating, but a lot of you Bay cats aren't comming original anymore.

Puff didn't have Sean John until he had a few (understatement) hits under his belt. No hit records = no money for clothing lines.

Say you got 2 rappers in a studio competing for a deal wit Dr Dre -One of em with $100,000 of jewelry on and all the latest Sean John gear and one of em with 2 year old Sketchers gear on. Let's say the cat with the Sketchers gear out raps the cat with the jewels and Sean John. You're saying that Dr Dre is going to overlook that and choose to produce the cat with all of the jewelry regardless of talent? GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE. You have no idea what you're talking about.

Close this thread and ban this fool

Mr. Peete anyone could get a record deal

I aint talking about Sketchers or Sean John, Im saying if you have your own shit and stop jocking other people clothes and styles then the Bay can progress.

If the Bay keeps buying Rocafella ( named after a rap label and the clothes are booty) or Sean John ( named after Puffy) then the industry would view the Bay Area a just " Customers" . Listen to EPMD " Your a Customer" and deeply think what they are trying to say.

All I am saying is image goes a long way. For example tattoos. Why do fools get Tattoos , one reason is so they could look tough .

Why fools change their hair style and wear all platnium and stuff, so they can look like they are on top of the game.

Its sad hip hop and rap is like that today. Back in the day it was alla bout lyrics. Now fools be imitating the Neptunes, 2 Pac, Baby, Jay Z etc.

The Bay be also flooded with garbage rappers trying to imitate than innovate.

Yup it's about that time for the 'why the bay aint blowin up' threads to start.

Mufuckas aint makin hits out here. Simple and plain. If you got a hit, you're in there, if you don't you aint. There it is.

This mufucka talkin bout some clothes and shit. How you expect any of the labels out here to have their own clothing line when they can't even sell 10,000 units? Get the fuck out of here with your fake as David Letterman Top 10 list..
real talk, i was thinkin the exact same shit as i read that fuckin list. man, fuck all the bull shit, niggaz just aint droppin hitz. we gotta step our music up.

11. Our culture isnt exagerated. Look at lil jon, cash money, no limit, ect, they are exagerating the fuck outta their culture. The way they talk, the way they look, LA uses the gang culture as a selling point. Consumers like gimmicks, and there arnt many gimmicks in the bay, which is a good thing in my opinion. I guess our way of life isnt fascinating to some kid in Idaho.

the only thing we have to offer is good music. unfortunatley, you need more than that nowadays to make it
