The Chinese national psyche is driven more by insecurity than anything else. There is a nagging sense of a need to be recognized as a global power, even when that power and influence is already apparent. China has been, in general, the loser when it comes to international contacts in everything from trade to war. That is why the protests against China in the Olympics were seen by many as more self-defeating than anything.

I think it's a sort of coddling. Dont offend them. They'll get mad and sulk in the corner.
