I don't see it as an easy or difficult choice. In liberal Seattle, San Francisco, or London, there is a dearth of information, backing, and support for the idea that religion is bullshit. In this envrionment it is much "harder" to espouse religion given social pressures and the ease of conformity. Or, I should say, harder than Oklahoma.
To say that religion is a cop-out or the result of mental complacency rejects the myriad contributions of religion to modern thought and social institutions, as well as the contributions of those of us who are religious. Denial of the value of religion in a postmodern world is naught less than oversimplification; many of the concepts that are propped up on these boards, for example, have their most solid support and codification in major world religions.
Furthermore, the form of mental gymnastics many here adhere to in support of a clearly faulty idea (Cuba is a free country, Saddam Hussein was a good man, every American effort is born of genuine evil, it is better to be born in X Muslim country than live in the US) could be seen as a form of religion, especially if the definition of religion is steadfast belief in a concept that denies evidence and logic.
