to me the biggest difference between now & the 90's is the Funk... the funk influence is what MADE the west coast sound

how often do you hear live bass these days ?

Ya that zion i song was knock too. i agree with silas 100%, but the thing is they have to make some new grooves and shit. the west cant keep samplin not just knee deep for the 100,000th time. Find songs that haven't been used before or get some musicians to make some new basslines and funky shit.

I miss havin some deep bass in these songs too.Theres ALOT of synth in the new Bay sound and I think thats thanks to Rick Rock since it seems after he came out with them Fed tracks everybody been tryin to emulate it and put they own twist on it.We need that funk in the beats too, thats not livin in the past cuz as long as you do it right it wont sound like some old ass shit. All these new slaps is tight tho but if someone can incorporate that old funk shit into everything too I think the sound would be complete.

Down south is all synths. i never hear live bass

Ant banks was one of the few bay area kats that used live bass.

everyone is using samples now. most producers dont even touch the keys anymore.

i think its cause most of the funky beats was either samples off old funk records or they was interpolated. You can only sample 70s and 80s shit so much before it gets too repetetive.

Lil Jon uses live bass.

Ant Banks used a lot of samples in his shit and/or replayed shit. He did play the bass on some of his shit too, but he did use samples a lot.

Far as producers not touchin the keys, how can you use all these synths and not touch the keys?

I heard that. Ant banks was the king, but all his shit wasnt always original. Theres more than a few examples but the two stickin in my head right now is Too Short - Im a Player (Bootsy Collins - Hollywood Squares) and TWDY - Players Holiday ( Bill Withers - Lovely Day)

cus their parents wasn't listenin to the music our parents did
my pops played me the blues all damn day, so i grew up with that soul shit

so that's the shit i like
new york kids, they parents listened to jazzy music, even new york soul was more jazzy
so that's why the 90's nyc was the jazzy stuff

out in the west
funk was big in the 70s these were groups comin outta Vallejo, Oakland, Ohio midwest and west coast
so our parents was bumpin this

these days, them young kids, their moms and pops were listening to Big Daddy Kane and NWA
they dont feel that funk stuff like we did

A lot of that shit especially the 11/5 shit was interpolated (replayed) off old funk records. like I been sayin, they either used a lot of samples of funk records or replayed the shit on old funk records and updated em a little bit. The closest shit you can find to original funk is Raphael Saadiq. You wont find many rap records that got that funk that are all original. there are some but the sampled/interpolated shit got it outnumbered by far.
