RAP = the more gangsta, straight forward side of urban music. i.e. BIGGIE, 2PAC, JAY-Z, ICE CUBE, etc.

HIP HOP = kinda the feel good, party shit. Like P. Diddy, Pharrel, etc.

I'll tell u rite now that hip-hop/rap are considered da same when it comes to the CDDB on the net. CDDB = CD data base. You stick in a biggie CD, hip-hop/rap is the genre. You stick in a P.Diddy or a Puff Daddy CD and it has a hip-hop/rap genre. I dink thur da same. Durr is no difference. Here is a straight rap flow,

Crusin' down the street in my fly ass lincoln,
I'm blinkin',
Cho momma's ass won't stop stinkin'.

OHHHH SHITTT!!!

I dont understand where cats got the idea that rap and hip hop are two different forms of music. Hip Hop is the culture, rap (MCing) is the music of that culture (along with the DJing, technicly speaking)

People round here think that the term "hip hop" itself, refers to backpacker music, or concious lyrics over sampled breakbeats and shit.

Think of hip hop as a tree. There are branches. The backpacker music branch would be closer to the roots of that tree. All this gangsta music is a different branch on the same hip hop tree, just a little further up from the roots.

You guys have it all wrong i've been in this music business for so long that, HIP-HOP is a word to EXPLAIN RAP MUSIC in a POLITICAL way, Thats why when you walk into a record store usually it says HIP-HOP, but most say HIP-HOP/RAP.

It's when a "RAPPER" goes somewhere and says like "what are you", "whats your occupation" and you reply "i'm a artist"/"singer" and then they ask "what kind of singer" Some might say a "RAPPER" but the political way of saying it is "im a HIP-HOP ARTIST".

Does anyone see what i'm getting here?

Or another thing when the WEST COAST was dominating the "HIP-HOP"scene in the early to mid-nineties the medis had no way of lableing this kind of music! to them it was totally diffrent shocking to say the least. How we where glorifying VIOLENCE,DRUGS,WOMEN they where sayin this is not HIP-HOP, this is GANGSTA RAP!

What i'm tryin to say is that HIP-HOP was labled just to POLITICIES THE WORD RAP!

It is very hard for me to explain but i tried my best hopefully someone who knows and his been in this game for along time can explain it a little bit better, PEACE

I see what youre saying Mafioso, but I disagree. Maybe thats how you see it from the buisness side of it all... but when i hear the term hip hop, I think of everything from the 70s block parties in the South Bronx to the young cat in his bedroom right now sequencing drum patterns on his computer. Its the movement, from the seed that started it all to the limbs that reach out in all directions.

The problem is that these ever-expanding limbs are so far away from the roots now that people forget to look down and thank the roots for keeping the tree growing strong. Some don't even know there are roots way down there.

Cats need to take Hip Hop 101 and shit. The four elements, thats what its all about. Simple.

I agree! But remember when RAP MUSIC forst started in the late 70's it was called "RAP MUSIC" becuase back then, SUGAR HILL GANG, GRAND MASTER FLASH where considered street music, Media outlets wouldn't touch it, Even tho they where'nt talking about violance they just ahd a diffrent way of putting words together and making them rhyme to make sense people out their they didn't know what to label it it, that term was brought up cause it was street oriented cause it came from the bad side of new york some might argue that it was BROOKLYN other might say QUEENS but since it was in the MEDIA CAPITAL of the world it spng a phonaminum urban kids took it to the next level street kids whering back packs break dancing in the street in better terms if you look at the latest source and vibe magazine it's sayin that KANYE WEST & DILITED PEOPLES are bringing back that BACK PACK RAP or in their terms HIP-HOP read what the source says "THE MAGAZINE OF HIP-HOP AND POLITICS"
