People complain about how bad sports are nowadays, and I tend to agree. However, most people blame this on the advent of free agency, first with baseball and then with the rest.

Basketball players are doing just fine with their soft cap and free agency system. Players stay attached to the team with the exemptions, and unless they go insane and force a trade, star players stay for the majority of their careers.
You'll see that baseball started turning to shit when the league expanded. There isn't enough talent to go around. Football has been getting progressively worse with more teams - yet the college game is better than ever.
To me, the answer is obviously that expansion is the culprit.
