its a fad cus whenever a big rapper do somethin,then everybody does it.Deads have always been around and cats been rockin'em but right now hella mothafuckas got'em..................
i remember back in the early 90's Dreads were hella in..........i bet you if Keak came back out with the gumby high top fade mothafuckas are gonna jock it and start rockin it..............

I'm bald... and bald heads started from ancient "Baldomians" who figured out, that if you cut your hair, your thoughts could flow more freely. Later in years, the monks of "Balderville" wore shiny domes and decorated them with oils to give them shine.
I know "Dreads" symbolizes going against society & "The Man". Most young niggas with dreads are for that cause... in a sense. Dreads are a fashionable faze that have touched everybodys block, borough, turf, hood, street, etc. worldwide. The Bay is a town known for giving birth to a lot of trends. So when a gang of niggas get together and do the same thing, it appaers to be they're thing. Kinda like if you're not a gangbanger and don't want to be associated with bangers... don't do whut the gangbangers do. So some niggas chosse not to wear dreads because they don't want to look like a "Bay Nigga". It's all stereotypical.

Historically the first people to ever wear "dreads" have been Hindu's.I tried to look it up on wikipedia but it wasn't very specific, the only other person I know who might be able to answern it is n9newunsixx5150, as might know the actual verse but it is supposedly written in the Vedic scriptures.

Samson was a Nazarite. Meaning he was a Jew who devoted his life to God. Samson's mother made a vow to God that her offspring would refrain from ever becoming ritually unclean. This meant he couldn't touch dead people, drink wine, or cut his facial hair, and I believe wear cotton, although I may be mistaken on the last one. Some of these vows are made for a certain amount of days. In Samson's case it was made for life.
Here's the biblical passage.
While he is under the nazirite vow, no razor shall touch his hair. Until the period of his dedication to the LORD is over, he shall be sacred, and shall let the hair of his head grow freely. (Numbers 6:5)
So unless the rappers who claim to know the true meaning actually follow what they preach in terms of Nazaritic vows they should should shut the fuck up...that is of course unless they are hypocrites and won;t follow the real meaning because it's as much a trend to them as it is to the posers.

Not saying for all, but for some black people dreads are the natural progression from not combing/ washing hair. Although they wouldn't look so neat if you didn't train them to look that way, it would just be one big lock. My bf had dreads for many years and the background he had went something like this: It's a way for black people (althought it is popular with other cultures) to get back to their natural state. Rejecting the ideal that having hair more like non-blacks is the ideal. Think of Malcom X before he was Malcom X, perming his hair. It also symbolizes strength and knowledge of your world and of the self. The length of your hair is symbolic of the many trial that life has presented to you. It's ironic because locks should not be seen as a fad but as a part of a way of life. You can and probably want to change your hairstyle according to the latest fashion trends. Locks are not for those people. It is seen as a committment to your spiritual self, a spiritual self that is not interested in fads. Also a lot of people do not like to call them dreads, because there should be nothing dreadful about them.
They don't wash it because its the belief that the hair has a way of naturally cleaning its self. Also most rastas are in to a natural way of life that means not using any scents on their person. After the hair gets locked up for a while its cool to wash it. At first you can't because it undose the lock.
