i think basic math reading and writing are essential but one thing that i think is most important that isnt mandatory nationwide is ECONOMICS AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT. kids arent taught how to save money, invest, make purchases, or make prudent overall financial decisions, but ART IS FUCKING MANDATORY? I DONT GET IT.

No, were NOT. He asked "which basic subject is most important"...reading is the most bacis of skills possible. It is the basis of LIFE, and like Heresy said, it goes beyond putting words together to form a sentence.

How can you get a job if you cant read the questions on the job application?

How can you walk by a construction site and not read a sign that sayd "do not walk here"?

You can go through all of life without knowing very much science and very basic math skills and be OK. However, going through life without reading skills....and you WILL struggle.

It is a travesty that FINANCE is not part of the core curricula in a capitalistic society.

I'd also put IT above those the choices presented.

Social Studies also belongs higher in my opinion.

The options presented in this poll are no doubt essential. However the standardized choices provided is for an archaic educational system which continues to fail.

So, reading and writing arent a subject? Its called Language Arts...or do they not have that in Europe?

Like i said, without reading skills, you cant do ANYTHING in life. Take how you want it, but Science is somehwhere LAST on my list of important subjects.

I can't speak about Europe as a whole, in my country we start with Grammar and Literature (a single subject in the beginning, then it splits)

To say literature is the most important subject in the modern world is ridiculous

Wow...we are done here. The fact that you dismiss Language Arts, in other words reading and writing, as "not important in the modern world" is absolutely fuckin retarded. Of course, comin from someone who wants to kill 72% of the world population to make the world livable for an extended 100 years or so, isnt that surprising.

You cant read=you not going far in ANYTHING, period. And that includes your precious science.

You may be an MIT student, but your common sense, or lack there of, is that of a door knob.

As a math teacher, I would have to say...READING.

Although kids learn to write letters before they learn to really read, it's the reading that increases you vocabulary and knack for putting sentences together.
