I loved Spice 1 back in the day, but have not felt any cd from him since Black Bossalini. I know he sold at least 2 platinum and 2 gold, that's better than 40 and most bay artists. So why doesn't anybody put some money behind him or has he fallen off that much! My guess is that he was a gimmick rapper like Dike Jones. He needs to reinvent himself like Dre or Nickatina and come back where he started because I bet he still got spits. Anyway, if anybody knows him or has an opinion on this holler back and let me know what's up. One

Hell naw! The hardest Bay rapper in history? I don't think so, you could never reduce Spice 1 to that level. That nigga is a legend, period.

Nah Spice 1 ain't no gimmick in my opinion. I just think he's way past his prime. I really liked his song "Welcome to the Ghetto" when it came out. There wasn't nothing gimmick about that song. And he stayed relevant for a long time like on the 5 on it remix and on Dusted and Disgusted and shit.
I just think everyone can stay relevant for only so long. Too Short being an exception cuz Short has staying power.

Spice used gimmicks as part of his arsenal, but they were all good ones.

he didn't need or rely on them, but they were good enhancements, such as:

1) "themed" songs that rely on specific topical wordplay, such as "187 Proof" (GZA from Wu Tang does this really well too).

2) the reggae-rasta style he kicks

3) the "scratching" with his voice thing, whch others have imitated. He used this one particularly on radio versions in order to clean up language.

Lots of rappers use gimmicks, some good some not.

Spice had/has some damn good ones, but as I said, he never needed them, he was solid enough without it.

Something tells me that's not even what you're talking about though, how/why do think Spice is a gimmick rapper?

you're correct in calling mike a gimmick rapper - that means you know what one is. but putting spice in the same category???????? did you somehow forget what one was all of a sudden when you called spice one or get really confused????

this is easily one of the worst threads posted on here EVER

he needs more money put behind him, better production. he still got flows.

i felt all his albums up until and including spiceberg slim, that album is dope. but since then he has had some very poorly produced albums and not mention even bad quality

For awhile he lost me when crossed from gangsta-shit to mostly playa-shit a few years back (or at lear that's the impression I got from the few things I was hearing).

I wanna hear his new shit though, is there any good reviews on The Truth, or can someone do a quick one?

who isn't a gimmick rapper, everyone has some sort of trademark if not you get lukewarm and no one wants to listen anymore.

In spices case dude is just way past his prime, dude has to be like 40 by now no one is gonna put money into a guy who is that old and hasn't pushed units since 1998. Spice should take some of that money he made back in the day and maybe bring up some youngsters in the bay and do more behind the scenes stuff.
