Sources: Celtics close to deal for Garnett
Jeff Goodman

The on-again, off-again deal with the Boston Celtics acquiring Kevin Garnett apparently is back on.

According to sources, the current deal on the table has the 6-foot-11 Garnett heading to Boston and the Celtics dealing away Al Jefferson, Theo Ratliff's hefty expiring contract and Rajon Rondo. There may also be other players and draft picks involved.
It's not quite done, but three industry sources — including one close to the Celtics — told FOXSports.com that it's extremely close and could become official within the next 48 hours.

"It's basically done," one source said. "If it does happen, this will make the Celtics relevant again."

Celtics boss Danny Ainge attempted to trade for the Minnesota Timberwolves star forward prior to the NBA Draft, but the 31-year-old perennial All-Star had no interest in heading to Boston.

However, things may have changed now that Ainge and the Celtics pulled off the draft day deal with Seattle for Ray Allen.

There have been numerous discussions during the last week between Ainge and Wolves vice president Kevin McHale, who are good friends dating back to their days playing together on the Celtics.

Garnett has the option to get out of his contract — which pays $22 million next season — after the 2008 campaign and become a free agent. He averaged 22.4 points and 12.8 rebounds per game last season — his 12th in the NBA.

Garnett is a 10-time NBA All-Star and was the league's MVP in 2004. He is also one of the better defensive players in the NBA.

The deal would give Ainge a team that could compete with anyone in the Eastern Conference with the trio of Paul Pierce, Garnett and Allen. The Celtics would also have nearly $60 million in salaries between the three players for next season alone.

The Wolves would get one of the league's top young players in the 22-year-old Jefferson, who averaged 16 points and 11 boards in 69 games a year ago, and a second-year point guard in Rondo with plenty of potential. They would also get Ratliff's $11.7 million salary, which will come off the books after this season.

KG, Pierce and Allen looks pretty good on paper, but all those guys don't got many years left in the tank. Danny Ainge aint building for the future success of his team. He's trying to save his job. He fucked em for the future pretty good by tying up 60 mil in 3 players.

I want to know why anyone is upset that we're not destroying our team to get garnett....I mean, kg has been my favorite player in the league for a long time now, but the warriors have young talent, why trade that away for a rent-a-player? I think the celtics will struggle to make the 7 or 8th seed in the east and be elminated in the first round if they make it.....then kg will be off to a real title contending team

WELL IF KG SIGNS WITH THE CELTICS THEN HES GONNA BE THERE LONGER THEN A YEAR. THE EAST ISNT THAT POWERFUL AND I CAN SEE RAY ALLEN, PAUL PIERCE, AND KEVIN GARNETT MAKIN SOME REAL NOISE. THAT SOUNDS DEADLY JUST SAYIN THOSE 3 NAMES TOGETHER. NO CHAMPIONSHIP OR NUTHIN BUT DEFINATELY A RAW COMBO. THE REASON GARNETT WASNT TRADED BEFORE WAS CUZ HE SAID HE DIDNT WANNA PLAY WITH THE CELTICS AT ALL. MAYBE THINGS CHANGED, I JUST CANT SEE WHY WOULD MINNESOTA MAKE THAT TRADE WHEN THEY HAD BETTER OFFERS. AL JEFFERSON IS KOO AND RATLIFF IS A BIG CONTRACT BUT IS WEAK AS SHIT. I CANT SPEAK ON RONDO CUZ I NEVER WATCHED DUDE PLAY BUT I'MA SAY HES NOT IMPRESSIVE CUZ I NEVER EVEN HEARD OF HIM BEFORE EVEN IF ITS JUST HIS 2ND YEAR

kg wants a ring. he thought he had it when he had spree & the alien. he might stick around after a season, but best believe if they ain't dominating (which they won't be) he's gonna head over to someone on the east who can fight for a ring

KG DESERVES A RING. DUDE PUT IN SO MUCH WORK BUT WAS STUCK WITH A TEAM THAT DIDNT HAVE THAT EXTRA TO PUT THEM OVER THE TOP. I WOULDNT MIND TAKIN HIM BUT IT WOULD COST US TOO MUCH. WITH THE WOLVES THIS YEAR HE WOULD HAVE RICKY DAVIS WHO IS SOLID, RANDY FOYE WHO IMPRESSED THE FUCK OUTTA ME IN THE SUMMER LEAGUE. PLUS THEY JUST GOT COREY BREWER. IF I WAS KG I WOULD STICK AROUND 1 MORE SEASON, GET MY 22 MIL, THEN GO TO A REAL SQUAD WHERE I CAN GET A RING. OUT OF ANYBODY IN THE LEAGUE, I THINK HE DESERVES TO GET A RING THE MOST. HIS CAREER HAS BEEN TOO SOLID TO NOT GET 1 BEFORE HE RETIRES

these star studded teams never really pan out but boston hasnt had 3 good players of their stature at the same time since mchale parish and bird.

i think the fact they are all in or leaving their primes and theyre all hungry for a championship we should at least get to the eastern conference finals. i would be a lot more worried if they were younger cats but theyre all mature professionals and there is the potential for them to win the east. something that hasnt been possible to say since the late 80s and very early 90s.

my homeboy at work today said he doubts they even make the playoffs , he's a sixer fan but when he said that i thought of the espn commercials where the guys talk sports out their ass. i think it would be a historical underachievement if they dont carry the celts to at least a playoff berth in the mediocre east.
