A 17-year-old Buena Park gang member has been convicted as an adult for the attempted murder of a man in a park in Fullerton last year.
Dave Dae Hong Kim is expected to be sentenced May 8 of one felony count each for attempted murder, aggravated assault, street terrorism, vandalism over $400, with sentencing enhancements for criminal street gang activity and great bodily injury, the Orange County District Attorney office said.
On March 29, 2008, Kim and fellow members of a Korean criminal street gang approached the victim, Jack Stotts, his brother, Scott Sttots, girlfriend Amy Espinoza and friend, Herman Martinez, who were all sitting at Emery Park around 9:30 p.m., prosecutors say.
After the gang members asked Jack Stotts where he was from -- meaning what gang he belonged to -- they began attacking him with a knife and baseball bat, which they passed around to each other while others kicked and punched him, prosecutors say.
Stotts was stabbed eight times in the back of the head and body. Martinez was also hit with the bat, prosecutors say.
When the victims tried to escape, they found the tires on Espinoza's car had been slashed.
Neither Stotts nor his friends belonged to a, gang, prosecutors say.
Another defendant in the case, Nam Gun Kim, 24, of Fullerton, is accused of being part of the attack. He is scheduled for jury trial May 5.
