Why do people even sign with labels nowadays (mainstream or indie)? It's pathetic--hip hop is killing itself slowly and blaming an outdated music industry for its untimely demise.
Seriously--just self release the record...a lot of New York cats like Killah Priest or AZ have managed to put out an incredible amount of quality music through their own DIY labels/imprints and a decent distribution arrangement over the past few years (you can get self-released Killah Priest records, AZ records at Best Buy for god's sake)...why bother with label politics in 2010 when every label--big or small-- is coming apart at the seams anyway?
Look at how Raided is doing it...and he's in prison! That guy is amazing. I was able to get his past three records at J & R Music in New York City, no problem.
What is the excuse that these Sac artists out in the free world have for these constant delays? Some seriously talented cats (Sav Sicc, Bleezo, G-Macc, the entire C-Way Roster) are clearly missing their moment to shine, and it's going to be their own fault...just like that cat Papoose from New York.
The music industry is bad enough as it is, and these dudes are still not getting their music out there...
...and as far as distribution goes, look at these Texas cats (G-Maab, Trae, whomever) who manage to get their independently released albums(non-Rap-A Lot projects) to Best Buy through that
Your Music Everywhere distro...
The record-buying public, more cautious than ever, is not going to wait on these Sacramento cats...
It's 2010...DIY
