Tom Rathman has accepted the 49ers' offer to take over as the club's running backs coach, he confirmed just moments ago as he was leaving Alameda after clearing out his belongings at the Raiders' complex. "Al Davis is a douchebag", Rathman said. "Mcfadden was a joke at Runningback, and Jamarcus Russell is a bust, I am glad to be coming back home to a real franchise."

The National Football Post reported the 49ers have named Rathman as the team's new RB coach. The club has yet to make any announcement because Rathman has not signed a contract. The 49ers do not announce contract agreements until the deal has been signed.

But Rathman said the club has offered him the position, and he has accepted. He said he will probably sign the contract in Santa Clara tomorrow.

Rathman interviewed for the position earlier today with coach Mike Singletary and general manager Scot McCloughan. Rathman takes over for Tony Nathan, whom Singletary fired after his only season on the 49ers' staff.

LOL, I doubt he said that shit publicly..but yeah, I guess its all but finalized.

Rathman accepts job as RBs coach
It looks like all Tom Rathman needs to do is sign on the bottom line. The National Football Post first reported, and MM later confirmed, that the 49ers offered Rathman the job as running backs coach and that Rathman has accepted the offer. The team has made no official announcement because Rathman has yet to sign the contract.

Coach Mike Singletary and general manager Scot McCloughan met with the 49ers' former fullback today. Rathman has been the Raiders running backs coach for the last two seasons but his contract recently expired.

Rathman seems to be an ideal fit at the position. He won two Super Bowls with the 49ers, paving the way for tailbacks while scoring 34 touchdowns, 26 on the ground and eight through the air. Rathman coached the 49ers' running backs from 1997 to 2002 before joining Steve Mariucci in Detroit in 2003. Last season he returned to the Bay Area to oversee the Raiders running backs under offensive coordinator Greg Knapp, with whom he worked in San Francisco. Rathman likely had an offer in Seattle. Knapp, it was reported Wednesday, will be Seattle's new offensive coordinator under head coach Jim Mora, Jr., yet another former 49ers' assistant.

Shortly after being named head coach, Singletary dismissed his offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and running backs coach. Now he's looking for the right combination of replacements who will implement an offense that includes, in his words, a running attack "that can impose its will on the defense."

The 49ers have yet to interview any outside candidates for the offensive coordinator position, although former Rams head coach Scott Linehan is on their list of potential prospects. Linehan has a solid track record as an NFL offensive coordinator, first in Minnesota and later in Miami. Linehan was able to lift both offenses - especially the running game - in his first season as offensive coordinator. The 49ers have taken a methodical approach to the offensive coordinator search and likely will resist hiring someone until the playoffs are over.

Good. Now he can teach these RBs how to become better pass/rush blockers. This is great news.

Lets go ahead and bring in Jeff Jagodzinski (former Boston College HC). BC ran a pro style offense and Jagodzinski worked with ROY Matt Ryan. If he were to be hired, I would see him sticking around for a awhile until a Head Coaching position becomes available for him. He would definitely need to prove himself again that he is capable of running an NFL team.

Your thoughts?

does gore really need to be coached up? I really don't see why y'all are excited about this. rathman isn't the reason our running game improved the last two years. it was cable's zone blocking scheme. I really couldn't tell you whether rathman is a good or bad coach.

Rathman is a fullback. He can help these fucks develop some blocking skills esp if and when we bring in a traditional run blocking fullback. This is more of a long term solution then short. Plus, he is well respected. I think he fits Singetary's character and coaching style well.

The idea was to bring in an OC AND someone to be his understudy, like Rathman, so if that OC gets another job the understudy can step in.

There were rumors that Rathman was being considered for our OC job, which had me nervous because I don't think he is ready. Now they need to bring in Linehan as OC and we're set. I don't see Rathman as a guy who is going to make our RBs perform much better, but rather as part of a long-term solution to our OC position. He'll learn under the OC and when the OC eventually leaves, he'll step in.

Fuck Micheal Robinson. That motherfucker is unproductive as fuck. I can't stand when he gets the ball, they might as well call a QB kneel down and move on to the next play. The only time he's ever done anything good was a couple trick special teams plays, other than that, he has no business touching the ball. They need to elevate Thomas Clayton and keep Robinson's bitch ass exclusively on the special teams unit.

He's no better than any other mediocre RB out of the back field. He's not out there running routes and patterns out of the backfield like Frank Gore does, he normally runs to the middle of the field and only gets a pass if there's nobody around him. He gets WAY too much credit and doesn't deserve it one bit. He has NO vision so he can't find holes, and when he does find one he hits it like a bitch. How many 1 yard gains do we need to see out of him? They say he's a decent blocker, but most of the time he's in there they hand him the fuckin ball so that blocking ability is never used. We need to elevate Thomas Clayton and stop wasting time and plays on Micheal Robinson.
