On the eve of the NFL Draft the Titans made a big move for their future, locking up left tackle Michael Roos with a six-year, $43-million contract extension.
Roos becomes the NFL’s third highest-paid tackle, according to his agent, Cameron Foster. The contract includes $15 million in guarantees, with $4 million in a roster bonus this coming season. Roos could also earn $1.5 million in Pro Bowl escalators attached to the deal.
The 6-foot-7, 315-pound Roos, a second-round draft pick by the Titans in 2005 out of Eastern Washington, has started 48 consecutive games. His contract was scheduled to expire after the 2008 season. The Titans and Foster began negotiating last month and hammered out the final details this week.
“He is a low-key guy and it takes an awful lot to get him excited, but he is smiling,’’ Foster said. “The beauty of this is I didn’t have to twist any arms to make the Titans realize his value. They were pretty much fair out of the blocks and this contract makes Michael the third highest-paid tackle, behind Orlando Pace (Rams) and Walter Jones (Seahawks).’’
Titans officials were not immediately available for comment Friday.
In March, Foster sent Titans General Manager Mike Reinfeldt a letter saying if Roos wasn’t locked up to a long-term deal by training camp, the team should be prepared to lose him next offseason as a free agent. Foster negotiated the extension with Vin Marino, senior director of football administration for the Titans.
“Michael loves Nashville and he wants to stay there,” Foster said. “He has some good friends there that he spends a lot of time with. It is a great fit for him down there. Now he’s set up to play there a long, long time.’’
The Titans are also interested in signing right tackle David Stewart to a long-term deal. He was offered a one-year tender worth $2.017 million in February, but has yet to sign.
