i dont understand why everyone hates on alex smith...dude was beginning to show strides in 06, last year he had too many injuries around him, he never had a chance. Imo the jury is still out on him

The Chargers have agreed on a two-year deal with inside linebacker Derek Smith.
Terms of the deal are not known, but Smith definitely took less than the $4.5 million he was due to make in 2008 before the 49ers released him on Tuesday.

Smith, 33, has played 11 seasons and led the 49ers in tackles from 2001-05.

The Chargers acquired him for experienced depth behind Matt Wilhelm and Stephen Cooper.

Smith was drafted by the Washington Redskins in 1997 and played four seasons under Norv Turner, who was the head coach in Washington from 1994-2000.

Smith, a Utah native, played collegiately at Arizona State. He and his family make their offseason home in San Diego.

I read somewhere online that Smith's troubles in 2005-6 were caused from vision problems and a weak supporting cast but he has since had Lasik and joined the mighty Charger Defense.
