Jets tell veteran RB Jones that he will be released Friday

NEW YORK -- The New York Jets will release running back Thomas Jones this week, allowing the leader of the NFL's top-ranked rushing offense to become a free agent.

General manager Mike Tannenbaum said Monday that the team told Jones it will cut ties with him when the league's free agency period begins Friday.

"Thomas joined us three years ago and has been a productive, passionate leader both on and off the field who has served as a positive influence for our younger players," Tannenbaum said in a statement. "We were fortunate to acquire Thomas and wish him the best."

Jones was due a $3.3 million roster bonus on top of a $2.8 million base salary this season. He and the Jets failed to reach a compromise on restructuring his contract; the team wanted him to take a pay cut.

Drew Rosenhaus, Jones' agent, didn't immediately respond to e-mails seeking comment.

Jones sat out voluntary activities last offseason while trying unsuccessfully to renegotiate his deal, which was front-loaded with $13.1 million over the first two seasons. He made only $900,000 in base salary last season, but didn't allow it to affect his play. Click here to read more...

What do you think of NFL's overtime proposal?

It hasn't been approved yet. It hasn't even fully cleared the NFL competition committee. But the league is at least considering a rule change that would allow both teams a more equal chance of getting the ball in the overtime format to decide playoff games.

If passed by owners during the league meetings next month in Orlando, Fla., the "modified sudden death" would eliminate the ability of one team to get the opening kickoff in overtime and then win the game with a field goal without the opposing offense ever getting the ball.

That scenario is how New Orleans beat Minnesota 31-28 this past season in the NFC championship game, drawing increased criticism of the current system after Brett Favre and the Vikings never got the ball in overtime.

Rather than considering something similar to college's "Kansas tiebreaker" where each team gets the ball and a chance to score from the 25-yard line, the NFL prefers to stay with a continuation of actual play beginning with a coin-flip and kickoff to start the OT.

The proposed system would give each offense a chance with the ball unless the first team scores a touchdown on its initial possession. In that scenario, the game would end immediately.

The idea is to encourage teams to go for touchdowns rather than field goals, but to still have a system in place that wouldn't necessarily drag out.

Such a rules change requires approval of at least 21 of the league's 32 owners, which could be difficult given the diverse opinions over OT rules.

John Niyo of the Detroit News reports he has confirmed the Lions have discussed a potential trade with the Chargers involving cornerback Antonio Cromartie,.

But the asking price for Cromartie may include running back Maurice Morris, in addition to a fourth- or fifth-round draft pick, a source with knowledge of the situation said.

The Chargers have been actively shopping Cromartie for weeks, and the Lions -- in the market for a starting cornerback -- appear to be the most likely trade partner at the moment.

A look at the Marshall trade market

Expect Denver to listen to offers for Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall this week in preparation for the start of league's trade season Friday.

With the help of the NFL Blog Network, here is a look at some of the potential landing spots:

Baltimore: The Ravens have been linked to Marshall since before last season. The Ravens have a huge need at receiver and Marshall would fit.

Chicago: The Bears don’t have much ammunition. But a Jay Cutler-Brandon Marshall reunion has to be intriguing for Chicago.

Cincinnati: The Bengals need a receiver. Badly. But it is unlikely they will pay big for Marshall.

Miami: Marshall would fit in with the Dolphins, but would Bill Parcells pursue the troubled Marshall?

Seattle: This may be the front runner to land the receiver. The Seahawks have players to trade and Marshall would like to reunite with former Denver assistant coach Jeremy Bates, who is now Seattle’s offensive coordinator.

Tampa Bay: The Buccaneers could use Marshall, but they may be worried about his off-field behavior.

Washington: New Redskins coach Mike Shanahan could always make a play for his former Denver star.

Is Marshall really as troubled as anyone else in the NFL? I feel like the media gave him a bad wrap. He hurt his arm horsing around with his brother and did some off the field stupid shit, and tried to force a trade. But every season, when the season starts, dude does nothing but produce and play lights out football. Its not like you're getting TO or Pacman.

I would not mind it if the Seahawks picked up Brandon Marshall. Just like you said, on the field he produces, and we need that.

with kvb and bulluck both testing waters team defense is going to be young as fuck for the first time in a while...harper HAS to be replaced..if he isnt, im questioning any decision making by Fisher from now on..when Harper/Hope were on the same side of the field it was a long pass td almost every time...

that option that VY and CJ started fucking around with was looking nasty towards the end of the season...barring injury vy could be a 1000 yrd rusher next yr if D. CORDS. dont start looking into ways to slow those boys down

ummmmmmmm YES.

He has had 911 called on him more than a dozen times in 5 years, adn is just 1 incident away from being suspended for the year. Add to that that he doesnt give 100% when HE isnt happy, and doesnt care about TEAM (in fact he is just like TO). And you do realize the mcdonalds wrapper was all an excuse/cover up....popular opinion is it was a domestic dispute with cousin (not brother) but they made that up to cover so he didnt get in trouble with league.

This guy hasnt broken ties with anyone from college when he was always getting in trouble then too, keeps the same hood rat around to keep calling police, was caught driving drunk, was a MAJOR instigator in the darrentt williams shooting, throws fits and sits out when things dont go his way.

does he have talent YES but is he as bad as to and pacman YES

Broncos place 1st Round tenders on both WR Brandon Marshall and QB Kyle Orton

meaning a team can sign them to an offer sheet and Denver has 7 days to match it if not they get them for a 1st Round pick, not a 1st and a 3rd like they were originally going to try to get for them

this is to test his market value. If say 5 teams offer him a contract. they will match it then trade him for the 1st plus some. if noone offers him due to 1st round tender then both he and the team know he has no interest around the league and maybe he will clean up act and sign a big incentive laden contract.

you guys can have him for a first rounder!!!! I agree brandon the player is top 5 in wrs, brandon the person though is another thing you get to deal with, which unfortunately affects brandon the player and also the team he is on.
