What do you think of NFL's overtime proposal?
It hasn't been approved yet. It hasn't even fully cleared the NFL competition committee. But the league is at least considering a rule change that would allow both teams a more equal chance of getting the ball in the overtime format to decide playoff games.
If passed by owners during the league meetings next month in Orlando, Fla., the "modified sudden death" would eliminate the ability of one team to get the opening kickoff in overtime and then win the game with a field goal without the opposing offense ever getting the ball.
That scenario is how New Orleans beat Minnesota 31-28 this past season in the NFC championship game, drawing increased criticism of the current system after Brett Favre and the Vikings never got the ball in overtime.
Rather than considering something similar to college's "Kansas tiebreaker" where each team gets the ball and a chance to score from the 25-yard line, the NFL prefers to stay with a continuation of actual play beginning with a coin-flip and kickoff to start the OT.
The proposed system would give each offense a chance with the ball unless the first team scores a touchdown on its initial possession. In that scenario, the game would end immediately.
The idea is to encourage teams to go for touchdowns rather than field goals, but to still have a system in place that wouldn't necessarily drag out.
Such a rules change requires approval of at least 21 of the league's 32 owners, which could be difficult given the diverse opinions over OT rules.
