So many ways!!!
A lot of us artists around here as of late use textures to tweek the text.A lot others use different programs such as kpt vector,Xara and eye candy also...Even illustrator is used to manip text...When working with text in PS you can also get a sicc effect if you know what to do and how the toold work...Such as adding a gradient overlay color to text then going to the filters menu and adding film grain,noise,distort,all kinds of filters...but it is a trial & error process until you get what you like....Layers styles is a major plus in effects IMO....All in all...just work with everything PS has to offer and you'll eventually get sumthing siccening...
