NEW YORK - If the typical stay-at-home mother in the United States were paid for her work as a housekeeper, cook and psychologist among other roles, she would earn $138,095 a year, according to research released Wednesday.

This reflected a 3 percent raise from last year’s $134,121, according to Salary.com Inc , Waltham, Massachusetts-based compensation experts.

The 10 jobs listed as comprising a mother’s work were housekeeper, cook, day care center teacher, laundry machine operator, van driver, facilities manager, janitor, computer operator, chief executive officer and psychologist, it said.

The typical mother puts in a 92-hour work week, it said, working 40 hours at base pay and 52 hours overtime.

A mother who holds full-time job outside the home would earn an additional $85,939 for the work she does at home, Salary.com.

Last year she would have earned $85,876 for her at-home work, it said.

Salary.com compiled the online responses of 26,000 stay-at-home mothers and 14,000 mothers who also work outside the home.

After reading the article more carefully it says they could have been paid that much if they were paid according to the everyday roles they perform. So in reality they're not making that money at all.

well they only cook for a few hrs tops maybe 2
clean for another 2
take kids to school maybe 45 min so break that all up and the probably really should be making like 80 bucks a day if u break up each job and pay them to what the average worker in their fields make and they aint gonna get breaded up 100 gs a year..
thats just to kiss house wives asses and say your job is worth sooo much... i think it is important but lets get real

If I could find someone who did that much for 80 bucks a day, I would hire then on the spot.

Edit: nm I didnt really read your post. What you're saying is they basically work 4 1/2 hours a day.

Why do they even bother comparing their roles to people with careers. People who've got degrees and worked years to achieve a better success. Basically that's a put down to all stay at home mothers, saying "you could've earned this but nope you're a stay at home mom."

You missed the point. It's not about what they could be paid but what they're worth.
