Blazers fans may have to wait a little longer to see Greg Oden in action.

According to a release on the team's web site, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft is likely to miss the 2007-08 season after exploratory arthroscopic surgery revealed cartilage damage to the Ohio State star's right knee.
"Greg had an arthroscopy and a micro fracture surgery today," said team physician Dr. Don Roberts, who performed the surgery. "He was found to have articular cartilage damage in his right knee. The area of injury was not large and we were able to treat it with micro fracture, which stimulates the growth of cartilage. There are things about this that are positive for Greg. First of all he is young. The area where the damage was is small and the rest of his knee looked normal. All those are good signs for a complete recovery from micro fracture surgery."

According to the release, Oden is expected to be on crutches for up to eight weeks. Recovery for micro fracture surgery generally takes between six and 12 months for full recovery.

"Certainly this is a setback, but our future is still incredibly bright," said Trail Blazers General Manager Kevin Pritchard. "Is it disappointing? Yes. However, this is a great core of talent and players of strong character and will continue to be."

"We know this discouraging news for all of our fans, however, the people of Portland are very enthusiastic and compassionate about their Trail Blazers and I know they will stand behind Greg and the team during his recovery," said Trail Blazers President Larry Miller. "We believe our fans and sponsors are going to continue to support us because they know we're headed in the right direction."

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Celebrated Trail Blazers rookie center Greg Oden, the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, will likely miss the 2007-2008 season after undergoing knee surgery Thursday, the team said.

Doctors found cartilage damage during an exploratory procedure, and team physician Dr. Don Roberts performed microfracture surgery to repair the damage.

"There are things about this that are positive for Greg," Roberts said in a statement posted on the Trail Blazers' Web site. "First of all, he is young. The area where the damage was is small and the rest of his knee looked normal. All those are good signs for a complete recovery from microfracture surgery."

The 7-foot center is expected to be on crutches for up to eight weeks. It likely will take 6 to 12 months for full recovery, the team said.

The Trail Blazers will hold a 4:30 p.m. ET news conference to discuss Oden's situation. The procedure was performed in Vancouver, Wash.

Seven-footer Greg Oden will spend pretty much all of his first season in the NBA on the Trail Blazers' bench.

"Certainly this is a setback, but our future is still incredibly bright," Trail Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard said. "Is it disappointing? Yes. However, this is a great core of talent and players of strong character and will continue to be."

Oden described the knee pain in an entry Tuesday on his personal blog:

"On my vacation earlier this summer i got up off the couch and remember my knee having a sharp pain in it. That was about a month ago. I didn't tell anyone because i didn't want to seem like i was complaining or making excuses for anything. Plus i wasn't doing anything at the time i realized it hurt, so i figured it couldn't be anything big.

"After a couple of weeks, i had to finally tell someone so i went to St. Vincent's Sports Performance (where i worked out at before draft) and got my knee looked at. That was right before i moved to Portland for good. My knee was swollen since i was there. I finally just said that i need to tell my trainer because this is not normal. We went to the doctor's the next day to get a MRI and that night me and my mom ended up in the doctor's office being told that I have to get surgery. It's a light one, just a scoop, but still it's just another setback. I would like for me to be playing and not seem like i'm a high-maintenance player, but things just keep popping up."

If Oden does not play this season, he would become only the second player in the common draft (1966-present) to be selected No. 1 overall and not play in the year of his selection. David Robinson was drafted by San Antonio in 1987 but instead honored his Naval commitment.

This is Oden's second health problem since the Blazers drafted him in June. He had a tonsillectomy in July after struggling in two Las Vegas summer league games.

Oden, despite being hampered by a wrist injury during his freshman (and only) season at Ohio State, averaged 15.7 points and 9.6 rebounds in leading the Buckeyes to the national championship game. He had 25 points and 12 rebounds in the loss to Florida.

The Trail Blazers were the surprise winners of the NBA draft lottery and chose Oden over Texas forward Kevin Durant, who went to Seattle. Portland opens training camp on Oct. 2 and its regular-season opener is at San Antonio on Oct. 30.

Information from The Associated Press and ESPN Research was used in this report.

He'll be fine. He might not even miss the whole season. Some players have made a full recovery from microfracture as quickly as 2 months. No need to rush him back though. He's young and his body should respond well to the procedure. In the meantime, Aldridge, Roy and Frye should make strides in their development and we might strike gold in the lottery again and pick up a michael beasley or a derrick rose. And on the bright side, Darius Miles is back down to 225 and has been cleared for running drills and could be ready to go a couple months into the season.

Damn, you're optimistic. Point is the Blazers aint doing a damn thang this season. Miles has been washed up for what, the past 5 seasons? What makes you think he's gonna be the player he ever was? Oden is gone for the season, its a done deal. He may come back to play this season but for how long, the final couple months or so? I agree Aldridge, Roy and frye are dope and will def. get better but you guys aint got nothing else. Plan the the Warriors shittin on yall again.

thats true, but every year im sorta disappointed in outlaw just cuz hes talented enough, he just doesnt know "how" to use it.. although it was really nice to see travis in the last few games in the end of the season drive to the basket on a lot of the plays, and even if he didnt make the lay up or dunk he'd still get to the free throw line and make like what 15 or 16 shots... Hes showing a little more aggressiveness in his game, his midrange needs to be better but his jump shot is improving though. Plus blazers got a new shooting coach ne way.

Why shouldn't I be? We got Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge and Greg Oden. Even with Oden out for the year,we still have the brightest future in the NBA. It doesn't matter if we don't make the playoffs this year because we weren't going to make any serious noise if we got in anyway. What we have now is another chance to get rich in the lottery and snatch up a Derrick Rose, OJ Mayo or Michael Beasley. I would almost be disappointed if we didn't take advantage of Oden being out and get another lottery pick. I think the worst case scenario would be for Roy and Aldridge to have monster seasons this year and they carry us to the playoffs and we miss out on the lottery. Keep in mind that that is a GREAT worst case scenario.
