HOLLYWOOD (CBS) Police detained 10 men for possible federal weapons violations Tuesday evening outside the BET Awards show at the Kodak Theatre.
A deputy police chief refused to say whether the men were working for Snoop ‘Doggy’ Dogg, who was dropped off just prior to the incident.
"I'm not going to confirm or deny that at this point," LAPD Deputy Chief Mike Hillmann told CBS 2 News. "We're still conducting the investigation."
Hillman said LAPD officers, working with federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents, ordered the men out of three vehicles at Highland Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard, and recovered some weapons, body armor and an "armored vehicle."
Hillmann said that "at about 5 o'clock we had a group of individuals that had been attendants at this particular event up here."
He said police got information that a couple of the people in the cars that had dropped off the attendees had body armor and guns and might be operating an armored vehicle.
About 5:30 p.m., Hillmann said, several people were stopped in one of the vehicles and detained.
"The vehicle itself, we believe, is either under contract or possibly owned by an ex-convicted felon. At this point, I'm not at liberty to discuss who that might be," he said.
"As the investigation continued on there were several other vehicles that were involved in traveling with this particular vehicle. It appeared they dropped off several people at this event."
Hillmann said police got word from federal agents that the detainees might be in violation of federal law: providing protection for a convicted felon in possession of firearms.
"Working with ATF, we conducted an investigative stop right here at Highland and Hollywood Boulevard of at least three vehicles and 10 individuals that we currently have being detained," Hillmann said.
He was asked directly if anyone was under arrest.
"Not at this point," Hillmann replied.
The reporter then asked if the felon in question was rapper-actor Snoop Dogg. Hillmann would not say.
According to broadcast reports, the entertainer had been dropped off moments before the police moved in, and may have been unaware of what happened to an entourage near the Renaissance Hotel after that.
Police with long guns drawn over the tops of patrol cars had the detainees spread-eagled in the middle of Highland, which was shut down temporarily, causing an even bigger traffic jam in a part of town where access was already restricted due to the awards show.
The event, sponsored by Black Entertainment Television, was scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
It featured appearances and performances by Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent, R Kelly, P. Diddy, India.Arie, James Brown, Ashanti and Jay-Z, with Mo'Nique hosting
