See How Far Your Salary Goes in Another City

By Kevin Purdy, 4:30 AM on Thu Jun 25 2009, 40,244 views

Money magazine posts a cost of living web calculator that covers a whole lot of U.S. cities with fairly up-to-date data, giving you the lowdown on how far your salary would go in your dream city.

More likely, though, is that you'd want a comparison of the cities you're looking at moving to for a new job or opportunity. Money's calculator pulls data on the cost of health care, groceries, utilities, and other necessities from the last four quarters available from The Council for Community and Economic Research, whereas some Google-located city cost comparison sites are working with years-old data.

After plugging in a (pretend) salary and the last city I remember visiting, I'm seriously considering the balance of great barbecue and cost of living. If I was serious about a move in jobs and locales, though, I'd have to know how to ask for a better salary.

Found your own surprising results with this calculator? Highly doubt some results your received? Share your findings in the comments. Thanks Kyle!

This tells me I need to get the fuck out of California. All of the places I was potentially thinking of moving to have a 65% decrease in housing and low double digits in every other category. If I can transfer and keep my pay I would be ballin' lol!

Cost of living in phoenix is great, only downside is high electric bills in the summer and dealing with nightmarish heat for 2-3 months out of the year lol. On paper i make less than i do when i lived in the bay area but instead of living with my parents sharing a room with my 2 little brothers I own my own bedroom house. My current mortgage wouldn't cover the RENT a studio apartment in the worst part of my hometown.

Hell yeah the bay is expensive and you do not get paid to compensate for the cost of living there. Thats why i made the choice to move cuz it just wasn't worth living there.

I just did this for a few places, and on the average, I'd be making like $8,000-12,000 LESS than what I make in Seattle. But it's still not accurate, cause it doesn't count the industry you work in, just how much you make.

And the difference in cost, is not that significant. Except utilities. Woopty-fucking-doo.
