It used to be, until a couple of years ago...I forgot exactly who's release it was, but the record company found a "loophole" where they could say they SOLD the units to all the stores that carry it, therefore it "sold" platinum.

Nowadays, platinum just means you have 1million+ copies of the album out there sold or in stores...
Yeah and the stores can return the cd's whenever they want to but once you have SHIPPED 500k albums to stores you are certified gold and get a gold plaque even if they end up sending hella cd's back.

damn big rich is a joke
He had his video on MTV and BET too....lol That usually means at least 50,000sold even if the song's weak.

He lost a lot of sales because they fucked up his shipping cuz I was looking for that album the day it was supposed to come out and it was nowhere to be found.... By the time I seen it on the shelf I already heard to many bad things about it not to waist my money.

shows/features.. dont believe everything these rappers say when they tell you they rich off rap and all that bullshit some eatin but most bay rappers aint cakin like they say they are.

Besides 20k is not that bad 20 x 4 (not sure how much they get per album) is still 80k.. the game in general is fucked up the whole industry is suffering major artists are floppin left and right plus most bay rappers dont really promote they shit like that how you expect your shit to sell when nobody even knows its out.

As far as Mess he does like 20k per solo album, yuk last album ( uga2) sold 33909.

And its hard to get accurate mixtape numbers cus they get sold the most in mom and pop stores and trough the internet the only copies that get scanned are the ones gettin sold trough regular music stores if it has a barcode it gets scanned its just that mom and pop stores/internet outlets are not registered.

Thanks 4 the info Truth. I already knew about Mess's numbers I was just looking for exact figures. I was already aware that these rappers aint really breaded like they say. 80k a year aint bad its just most bay rappers probably aint even makin that cuz most of them aren't sellin (and if they are makin this much or more I can almost guarantee they aint makin it from the rap game). There's only a certain amount of shows you can do when you only sell 5-10,000. Like Jay said men lie, women lie, but numbers don't.

Yeah but sales dont always equal popularity just like radiospins dont always mean your album is gone sell.. mistah fab only sold 12k but he the hottest rapper in the bay as far as popularity goes and he stay doing shows.

And you cant tell me fab aint caked up.. he aint rich or nothing but he is eatin good off the rapgame.

ITS A SHAME..... OUT OF ALL THE PEOPLE IN THE BAY WHO CLAIM TO SUPPORT FAB ONLY 12,000 SALES. FANS NEED TO HIT THE STORES AND SUPPORT. YOU GOT CATS LIKE MIKE JONES AND SLIM THUG ETC. IN THE SOUTH WHO WERE MOVING CLOSE TO 100K UNITS. FANS AND THE PUBLIC NEED TO CREATE SOME $$$$ FLOWING IN THE MUSIC GAME. I BET THE BAY SOUNDSCAN NUMBERS FOR D4L AND THAT "WALK IT OUT" BULLSHIT ARE ALMOST THE SAME.

WE GOTTA SUPPORT THE HOMEFRONT!!!!

I wonder what the plaque looks like when you go diamond.

The Diamond® Award is adorned with a 728-ct. crystal diamond placed in a faceted sterling silver setting. Each setting is engraved with the RIAA® logo and the initials of the designer. The 12" high award sits atop a black tapered, 3 1/2" high base, engraved with artist presentation text. - from riaa.com

Yea I feel wut u saying about radiospins not equaling success. I agree FAB (along with Keak and 40) are the hottest in the bay right now and eatin good, but I'm talking about the 95% of the other rappers in the bay that aint doing shit on soundscan. The whole rap game is fucked up and sales is just petiful all around so I aint really suprise that bay artist aint sellin. I'm actually more shocked that cats is actually making a living off it and some are even millionaires from the rap game.

SEE WHAT IT IS IS THAT THESE CATS IS CONTENT WIT THAT SHIT...15, 20, 30 THOUSAND CUZ ITS STILL AROUND $5 A UNIT SO THE MATH IS STILL COO IF U DROPPIN 2 PROJECTS A YEAR...NOT ONLY THAT ON TOP OF THEY VERSE AND SHOW MONEY...COMPARED TO A MAJOR THATS GOOD, LIL WAYNE AND THEM NIGGAS BE GOIN PLATINUM N SHIT BUT IT DONT MATTER THEY ONLY GETTIN LIKE $0.50 CENTS A RECORD.... SO U CAN STILL TWIST 100-200 RACKS OUT THE RAP GAME A YEAR IF U ON YO GRIND, EASILY. IF MOTHAFUCKAZ WOULD GO THE ROUTE JT AND E40 WENT AND SOLD THEY SHIT OUT THE TRUNK ACCROSS THE NATION THEY SALES WOULD BE THROUGH THE FUCKIN ROOF OFF TOP. BUT LIKE I SAID, THEY CONTENT WITH THE MONEY THEY GOT AND FEEL THEY TOO GOOD TO PUSH OUT THE TRUNK.

Yukmouth and tech n9ne are some good examples of independent rappers that aint really gettin no radiospins but REALLY cakin off the rapgame and both sell more then keak, fab, quinn etc.

Its also the amount of work you are willing to put in some people just think the music is going to sell itself. It's important to be visible.. be out there, collaborate with people from different places, show your face at events, in the streets etc. Alot of rappers from the bay are scared to invest in their careers even tho i can understand that cuz the music industry is fucked up and so unpredictable but if you aint serious with it you should leave it alone.

OK I HAD TO JUMP IN THIS THREAD TO CLEAR SOME SHIT UP

definitely some good insight from jt and a couple others in here but here's some more shit for ya....

quinn is now at a little over 18k (soundscan updates every weds.)
ya boy is at 5800

-just cuz u have a video on tv and some spins doesn't mean u r gonna sell anymore!!! its great exposure but its takes a lot more than that nowadays to get lazy people off the same seat where they can easily download your single on their computer which is much easier and cheaper! if u r a new artist, it takes nationwide touring, mass media campaign, major retail programs... the buzz needs to be crazy, and the label needs to put $$$$$$$$$ behind u. 50 cent went diamond cuz he was able to cross over, he dropped at a perfect time, the marketing campaign behind him was genius and his album was THE album that kids needed to have!! notice i said KIDS.

-look at the music industry and how its advancing right now... take notes on history! jt touched on it too.... vinyls died out, tapes died out, and digital downloading is slowly taking over so to all u rappers out there: what do u think u should do? i'm not saying forget about the streets and pushing cds but the game has changed. the internet is where its at right now.

-THE BIGGEST POINT I WANNA ADDRESS: YES WE MAKE A LIVING OFF THIS SHIT!! THERES SOOOO MANY WAYS TO MAKE A LIVING OFF MUSIC, U NEED TO HAVE A PLAN AND A GOOD TEAM BEHIND U!!!!!!! DEDICATED, ORGANZIED, BUSINESS ORIENTATED AND PROFESSIONAL PEOPLE WITH A VISION!

HERE'S SOME OF THE WAYS WE (ME AND SAN QUINN) MADE MONEY THESE PAST COUPLE YEARS:

CD SALES
PUBLISHING (DONT SLEEP ON THIS)
SHOWS
FEATURES
ENDORSEMENTS
VIDEO GAME OPPORTUNITIES
MERCHANDISING

THERES MORE TOO, U HAVE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EVERY CONNECTION U MAKE AND REMEMBER THIS SHIT IS A BUSINESS.
