Yeah i agree this is What I feel the general consensus is. I think its the gae of monkey see monkey do. About 10 years ago or so mixtapes were used as a great way to promote, but with so many rappers now the market is flooded and with rappers given so much music away at a rate I can hardly keep up..probably is tone of the reason why sales are down. Look at Crooked I everyone knows he is talented..but with 100 mixtapes out and weekly songs why would a company invest in him when it could be confusing to the consumer when the new albums dropped..they may think they already have it.....or with all the free mixtapes and songs I know longer fiend for the music Im gettin supplied daily for free.

one of the biggest problems i have with albums these days is rappers put songs on there myspace or mixtape 6 months sometimes before they release there album and put the same songs on the album. I know they are trying to get a buzz or promoting it but i rather not hear any track on the album before it comes out.

it helps with expozure, but it makes all their stuff sound watered down......

anticipation is key. If a rapper only comes with a release every 6-12 months, the fans will be anticipating it halla hard, but if you come out with something every 2 weeks like jacka or messy marv, its gonna desensitize people.
I dont know

who cares. the rap game is a pipe dream for 99.99999% of rappers and even a good portion of the ones who "make it" dont even do so hot.

Coop what Im hearing is rap music is disposable. We get the newest product let it run its course use it up throw it out and it is on with the next thing. Good thing people like Al green, the Ojays etc realize that even though it has been over 30 years since some songs have been recorded.. there is still a market for it and some of them artists been living off them royalties. O.K..so another example is Ronald Isley who has been making music since I believe the 50's well that is about 50 years in the game and when he makes new albums they still do well and he can cater to the younger crowd who also purchase his music....so you may say his formula has changed...to an extent the music in some songs have changed slightly but he brings what he does best to the table..which may be why he is still sucessful at doing music. Now rap artists some have done fairly well , such as Ice Cube...the music changes a bit but his style does not change drastically.....what Im hearing is that artists need to move on and forget about their loyal following who actually buys albums and get crunk..hyphy or whatever the next thing is..maybe wear a rhinestone suit and eyeliner..I think this is the issue is the changes are drastic with artsist who feel they need to change everything up.....Then again, The chances of rappers making it big today are slim and none and tomorrow probably less..and yes they make money off ring tones...how long ya think that will last?

well you know you and I can go hrs on these issues but im not for complete change as in abandoning your roots but i think we both agree that you have to change in order to keep up with the times and cater to wats relevant if you want to remain relevant nigga's rapping about dickies and chucks has since had its time unless you do it over a crunk beat lmao maybe lol...

but ringtones imo is just the new way to sale music for some artist everything is going digital i remember having a wad of money in ur pocket was the kool thing now its black & platinum visa's lol im not gonna knock anything about ringtones when ppl like chamillionaire has sold 3.5 million plus shit i bet any underground rapper on this site would be happy to just sale 1k in ringtones if they could lol...

^^^ I agree Im just saying that I believe artists should not rely on ringtones as the next meal ticket.... as it is todays mealticket and it may be a fad that passes soon..remeber your first ringtone? I wanted to have shit no one lese was doing..now everyone has em....so time will tell how long this trend lasts.
