I got it just for the blu ray, it's good so far, I had a minor pause during the last scene of 300 though, not sure what caused that. It also upconverts your sd dvds to 1080p. All in all, so far, it hasn't let me down at all.

Basically (I think) the only drawback is the sacrificement of several major studios if you choose to get blu ray over HD, and vice versa, of course, I don't have an HD DVD player, so I can't comment on the picture/sound quality loss/gain.

quality wise hd-dvd and blu-ray are nearly identical. even tech nerds fight over little specs that each one does better like hd-dvd has better interactive features and blu-ray has more movies etc. but to the average eye they are identical in terms of quality. my boy has a ps3 and a hd-dvd player that he got for free with his 1080p tv. ive seen movies on both of them and they are both great in quality. right now hd-dvd has a exclusive deal with paramount pictures that all their movies will be on hd-dvd only. so if you want to see the bourne ultimatum in high def you need a hd-dvd player. and sony i think is tryin to get disney exclusivity.

then there is a article going around online that microsoft (which backs hd-dvd with toshiba, sony does blu-ray) is doing this exclusivity deal to keep a true format, hd-dvd or blu-ray, from winning. Its doing this becuase in several years their digital distribution thing will come out and require no dvd type player only a set top box that stores your downloaded high def movies and shows.

but if you want a blu-ray player then id get a ps3 rather then a stand alone bluray player. im pretty sure its just as good as any other blu ray player in terms of load speed and features and picture quality. and ps3 does 1080p with games and bluray.

as far as i know, the only diff btween them is that the blu ray is capable of true 5.1 surround sound. something about master quality sound or someshit like that.

and the theme creator and ability to d/l themes fuckin rox! now all ps3 needs is to get the divx support they promised and ill b happy with the investment.
