Does anyone here have trouble making basslines? Let me first start off by saying I ain't no genius in music theory or nothing, so I'm doing it all pretty much by ear and have taught myself pretty much just by trail and error. But Basslines seem to be the only thing holding me back. I have trouble getting FUNKY and improvising. Most of my basslines tend to have too much of a sustained sound like a background Pad/String sound and overall just pretty simple and predictable I think. I feel I'm messing something in between to make them a bit more exciting. I also find it a bit hard to play those fast funky parts on the keyboard, another reason why I have trouble I think.

One example of a song that's fairly new is the "DPG - Cali Iz Active" track, the bassline is more of what I'm talking about. I like how it changes a bit throughout the track with funky elements. That's also a synth-bass sound in that track, something that I prefer to use also since it's hard to come by good samples of an electric bass.
if you're slow on gettin the right notes out rhythmically, practice the main skeleton of the bassline, and when recording, smash some random/nearby notes to the rhythm you're after, then in the sequencer, move the notes up/down to achieve your desired melody .. ?!? You gotta have patience for this though. Years of mapping out key zones for samples has aided me in gettin this shit down. :beard:

Whilst you're doing this, you may be inspired to finish your bassline with some more tweaks (which sounds well within your reach. I aint to good at this technical stuff, you seem more knowledgable than me). good luck!

example. fresh beat made today. not finished btw. the jumpin is because i was makin a .rar at the same time.

Thanks, yeah that's pretty much what I've been doing actually. Like you said, start off with the bare bones first, then fill it in after. Seems to be the only way to do it if I can't record it all at once properly.

BTW, cool beat, sounds good. Just needs a bassier kick I think.

^ what i'm gonna do next when I pass Staples office supplies, is buy them little circular stickies, and note up the middle octave of my keys to help me jam off new scales. Just an idea.

Thanks for the input on the beat! Yeah that kick is in the forefront i'll audition a few more & see what i can get.

my live playin is gettin a little better, I went sick with some Deep Purple style organ at the end of this beat i made today.. peep. sleazy g-funk

D@mn, that $hit is fucking dope bro! My kind of $hit right there! That's the TRUE WestCoast sound IMO. I love that analog sounding bassline. I just love analogish sounds like that in general whether it be a bass, lead, fx sound,etc... You definitely got the FUNK man, keep it up!

BTW, what synth did you use for that bassline? Minimoog VA?

I can't believe most producers don't make this kind of FUNKY $hit anymore. :( That's why Hiphop is dead, the music itself, SUCKS now a days. There ain't no more head bobbin Funk.

Here's a little something I made. The general concept is there, I'm sure I can get more Funky and add in more variations and new elements, but I do kind of like it just the way it is. I can picture C-Bo spitting to this shit.

^^ yeah that beat is tight, the bassline sound you're using, can it sustain for longer? just an idea. cause it's just stabs to go with the kick rite now. do some pitch/mod wheel type shit.

Luni, Marvaless & C-Bo on that track fasho.
