A Spokane, Washington man who accidentally shot and killed a graphic artist at a rap album photo shoot was sentenced to three years in prison yesterday (March 8).

According to Washington's KXLY ABC 4 TV, Kevin Culp along with three other men, were leaving the St. Joseph's cemetery, in Spokane Valley in 2004 after taking photos for a rap album cover when Culp picked up a pistol that had been used as a prop in the photographs. When he pulled the trigger the gun went off, leaving Cedric Sykes, who was driving at the time, paralyzed and on life support. Sykes was hospitalized and would die from his injuries on May 5, 2004.

Kevin Culp plead guilty last week just before he was to stand trial on a second degree manslaughter charge that resulted in the shooting death of Sykes.

Sykes' mother Karen told the court Thursday that after being in the hospital for three weeks her son asked her to take him off life support.

"There's no words to describe the feeling when you learn your son has been mortally wounded and yet hangs on to life by threads," Karen Sykes told the court.

Judge Maryann Moreno sentenced Culp to three years as part of his plea agreement. He was previously sentenced for to up to seven years in prison in Idaho for vehicular manslaughter for the deaths of three of six family members riding in a minivan that he collided with near Athol, Idaho on July 23, 2005.

should've checked if the gun was loaded before pulling the trigger.. common sense.
true. but i would think "common sense" would fall more along the lines of not bringing a loaded gun in the first place, where multiple people are going to be holding and pointing it, right? just my opinion

Lmfao @ why should he do time? Dude killed someone. It may have been n accident, but his negligence made the accident happen. Same as if someone drinks all night, gets into their car and smashes into someone and killing them. How many guns do you pickup and start pulling triggers? Anytime I handle any piece I always check if it's loaded, even if I don't even touch the trigger. Dude deserves more.
