Like in your scenario, I became a fan after watching Greg Lloyd in the early 90's..

The mistake people make is by me saying I'm a Steelers fan that I'm saying I'm a fan of Pittsburgh. I'm not. I'm born and raised in LA and that's what's in my blood. But the reason why the Steelers are so popular nationwide is because of their organization and their philosophy. They pride themselves on working hard, being humble and overpowering their opponents. A lot of people, especially from working class cities identify with that. That's what the majority of LA is..

If the Steelers win the Superbowl my joy comes from investing 10 years of my life in rooting for a team and seeing them overcome all the obstacles they've had to get here. The Steelers are different than most teams. Change is slow and seldom. They've had Bill Cowher 14 years. Jerome 10. Their logo/uniform hasn't changed since 1963. They've had 2 coaches, 2 owners from the same family. It's a team built on tradition. It's not hard to be a fan when they stand for the same things you do. It runs deeper than just football for me..
I understand how you feel, I feel the same way about Cleveland. The two cities are not much different.

But let me just say...LA is alot different than Pittsburgh. Have you ever been there? Gone to the factories, hung out with some of these people? Gone to a game in Pittsburgh. If you feel that strongly about the Steelers...imagine what it would be like if you were from there, or lived there.

It is different.

gRINgO STAR,
I'VE SEEN PEOPLE ALMOST KILL EACH OTHA OVER SPORTS. I DONE SEEN PEOPLE LOSE MORTgAgES OVER SPORTS. EVEN gANgS WEAR SPORTS SHIT TO REPRESENT THEM AND KILL FOR MUTHA-FUKAS DISRESPECTIN' THAT. IT AIN'T JUST SPORTS. MAYBE TO SOMEBODY LIKE YOU. BUT INSULT THE WRONg PERSON AND YOU MIgHT FIND SOMETHIN' OUT. ALL I'M SAYIN' IS THAT IT'S NOT JUST SPORTS. THIS SOCIETY IS ALL HUNg UP ON IT AND THEY TEAMS. IT'S A LEgAL WAY TO BANg, WITH MONEY TO BAK IT.

Does that mean i have to embrace that?Fuck no...and i refuse to...

I almost got into a fight a Hawks game...for wearin a VIRGINIA TECH Vick jersey...yes we were playin the Falcons...and i wasnt even CHEERING for the Falcons...but these loud mouth drunken frat boys STILL wanted to flip me shit...dude really wanted to box me for it...so i turend arouns and said "You really wanna scrap over a fuckin jersey?Im a fuckin Seahawk fan...who happens to USED to like Vick when he was in college...thats it!And to fight me over that is ridiculous!"Dude stopped and thought about it and agreed with me....we ended up choppin it up the whole game...he was actually a cool cat...

And gang members dont BANG FOR the tema sthey wear...they bang the colors on the jersey man...stop makin it out to be some gang conspiracy...Nortes wear 49er jerseys for 1)its red and 2)most of them Nortes are inthe Bay..and the niners are a Bay Area team...imagine that!!Just like Crips and Surs sport Dodger shit...the jerseys are 1)blue...and 2)they are from So Cal...makes sense dont it?

The point is...IT IT IS JUST SPORTS...do you own part of the Broncos?Do you play for them?Do you coach them?If you answered NO to any of these questions...then you have no REASON to fight someone over that...plain & simple....

^LOL.

#1) I AIN'T DEFENDIN' FIgHTIN' OVER SPORTS

#X) I'M JUST STATIN' REALITY, HOW THANgS ARE IN THIS FUCCED UP SOCIETY.

#3) YOUR OWN POINTS AND STORY PROVE MY POINT.

LET'S BREAK IT ON DOWN SINCE IT SEEMS YOU HAVE PRE-CONCEIVED NOTIONS WHAT I'M SPEAKIN' BOUT.

YOU STRESSED, "Does that mean i have to embrace that?Fuck no...and i refuse to..."

gIVIN' ME A HARD TIME ABOUT MY TEAM, I CAN SAY YOU HAVE EMBRACED IT.

THEN YOU STRESSED, "I almost got into a fight a Hawks game...for wearin a VIRGINIA TECH Vick jersey...yes we were playin the Falcons...and i wasnt even CHEERING for the Falcons..."

EXACTLY. WHICH MAKES THIS STATEMENT HAVE MORE VALIDITY: "I'VE SEEN PEOPLE ALMOST KILL EACH OTHA OVER SPORTS. THIS SOCIETY IS ALL HUNg UP ON IT AND THEY TEAMS."

THEN YOU STRESSED, "but these loud mouth drunken frat boys STILL wanted to flip me shit...dude really wanted to box me for it..."

AND NONE OF THEM WERE gANg MEMBERS, RIgHT? THEY WERE NOTHIN' BUT COLLEgE STUDENTS. YET AND STILL THEY WANTED TO MASH YOU LIKE YAW WAS RIVALS.

THEN YOU STRESSED, "so i turend arouns and said "You really wanna scrap over a fuckin jersey?Im a fuckin Seahawk fan...who happens to USED to like Vick when he was in college...thats it!And to fight me over that is ridiculous!"Dude stopped and thought about it and agreed with me....we ended up choppin it up the whole game...he was actually a cool cat..."

gOOD WAY TO DODgE A BULLET. THAT TOOK A LOT OF COURAgE AND HUMILITY. IF IT WAS ME AND THE HOMIES, THE FRAT BOYS WOULD OF BEEN RUNNIN' AND gETTIN' STOMPED.

THEN YOU STRESSED, "And gang members dont BANG FOR the tema sthey wear...they bang the colors on the jersey man...stop makin it out to be some gang conspiracy..."

THE TEAMS REPRESENT THEY CITY OR AREA. IF I'M FROM SEATTLE AND BANgIN' SOME SEATTLE HOOD TO THE FULLEST, YOU THINK I AIN'T gONNA REPRESENT MY CITY(IF THE COLORS DON'T CONTRADICT)? THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN' BOUT.

THEN YOU STRESSED, "Nortes wear 49er jerseys for 1)its red and 2)most of them Nortes are inthe Bay..and the niners are a Bay Area team...imagine that!!Just like Crips and Surs sport Dodger shit...the jerseys are 1)blue...and 2)they are from So Cal...makes sense dont it?"

YES AND YOU JUST MADE MY POINT. IF A TEAM REPRESENTS A CITY OR TEAM, WHY WOULDN'T SOMEBODY FROM THAT CITY (ESPECIALLY IF THEY BANgIN') NOT WEAR THAT TEAM JERSEY TO REPRESENT WHERE THEY FROM?

THEN YOU STRESSED, "The point is...IT IT IS JUST SPORTS..."

TO YOU. HOW CAN YOU SPEAK FOR EVERYBODY? TELL THAT TO THAT FOO' WHO HAD A HEART ATTAK AFTER JEROME BETTIS FUMBLED AT THE ONE VERSUS THE COLTS. MY POINT IS THAT IN THIS SOCIETY IT AIN'T JUST SPORTS NO MORE. PEOPLES LIVES REVOLVE AROUND IT.

THEN YOU STRESSED, "do you own part of the Broncos?"

I WISH I DID.

THEN YOU STRESSED, "Do you play for them?"

I WISH I HAD.

THEN YOU STRESSED, "Do you coach them?"

LET ME ASK SHANNAHAN ABOUT THAT.

THEN YOU STRESSED, "If you answered NO to any of these questions...then you have no REASON to fight someone over that...plain & simple...."

TELL THAT TO THE PEOPLE THAT DO. BUT ON A FLIPPED COIN, IF SOMEBODY DISRESPECTIN' ME AND WHERE I'M FROM, THE WAY I TALK, WALK, CARRY MYSELF, MY EXPRESSION, SUBCULTURE, AND STYLE(AND THIS CAN EASILY REPRESENTED BY THE TEAM THAT REPRESENTS THAT CITY) THEN I'M gONNA CALL THEM ON THEY DISRESPECT. I'M gONNA MAKE THEM SWALLOW THEY WORDS, POINT, BLANK, PERIOD.

SO MY POINT IS THAT IT'S NOT ONLY SPORTS TO A LOT IN THIS WORLD. MAYBE TO YOU PERSONALLY, BUT IT DON'T MATTER IF YOU REFUSE TO THINK THAT WAY, THERE'S gONNA BE SOMEBODY THAT WILL THINK THAT WAY I:E: YOUR NEW FRATBOY BUDDY THAT ENDED UP BEIN' COO'.

I feel you for sure. And I know that a lot of other people nation-wide feel similar things and root for the Steelers for similar reasons. And I know I can't really get inside of you and know just how happy you are when they win and sad you are when they lose.

But the issues I've got is that 9 times out of 10 it seems like the folks that root for teams nationally (with no connections like the guy from Cleveland has) pick a team with a tremendous amount of history and tradition (i.e. Super Bowls). Now that is the problem b/c as sports fans we pride ourselves so much in who wins and who loses, so the folks who picked to root for different teams, whether it was unconscious or conscious, inevitably pick good teams.

So it's CHEATING in my book, I suppose. I don't think it's a coincidence you're a Steelers fan. I think those 4 Super Bowls had a lot to do with it (either directly or indirectly). Those reasons which you stated very well, are cool and all, but in reality Pittsburgh ain't any more working class than the majority of NFL cities (don't disagree with me, I have the numbers), the players don't come from anymore of a working class background than the players in other organizations, the fans aren't any more working class. It is an image that they try to promote, and they are very proud of. Hell I was on their website today, and there tickets are some of the most expensive in the NFL, you had to be a member of some club to watch the Super Bowl Pep Rally in Heinz Field online, etc. It's just an image nowadays, that all of sports is commodified.

They definitely deserve a lot of respect for sticking with Cowher though.
