LAS VEGAS -- Oscar De La Hoya plans to continue fighting and has targeted Britain's Ricky Hatton for a possible clash next year.

"There's been rumblings going on about it," said the Mexican-American multiple world champion, known as "Golden Boy", of a possible Hatton bout.

"I respect Ricky Hatton. He's a great fighter, he's a great guy. If that fight does get made, fans all over the world will be ecstatic. They will see a fight. Ricky Hatton comes to fight. And that's what I love. If we ever do it, it will be a heck of a show, that's for sure."

Hatton told Reuters: "It would be an honor to share a ring with a modern day legend like Oscar.

"It would be great to fight him in England in a soccer stadium or America. It would be some fight. It's those sort of fights that secure your legacy."

It is not the only option available to Hatton, whose stock rose in the United States following his fourth-round knock-out of Mexican Jose Luis Castillo last month.

U.S. television executives would like to match him later this year against any one of WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico, former champion Shane Mosley, or WBC champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., who beat De La Hoya on a split decision in May. A Mayweather fight, in particular, excites Hatton.

"It's no secret that I also want to fight Floyd," he said.

"Hopefully in the autumn. He is regarded as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, but I feel I have the style to beat him. But if Floyd won't fight me maybe Oscar would. Oscar has never dodged anybody."

Mayweather said he was retiring following his victory over De La Hoya, but following Hatton's defeat of Castillo, said he wanted to "beat him all the way back to England."

A fight with either De La Hoya or Mayweather would almost certainly have to be in the welterweight division, seven pounds heavier than Hatton normally fights and seven pounds below De La Hoya's recent fighting weight.

I guess I'd rather see Oscar fight Hatton than Mayweather. Floyd needs to fight Cotto, IMO, if he wants to be considered the best. Beating Hatton really wouldn't do much for Mayweathers legacy.

Shit, as of now Hopkins has a better legacy than Mayweather. He's fought all the best fighters that have been available to him, whereas Mayweather cannot say the same.

Yeah, the only fights I'd like to see Mayweather in are Cotto or Mosley.

Hatton v Oscar? Meh. I'm sure the only reason Oscar wants to do it are the # of fans it will attract, and he probably feels he can kill Hatton due to the size advantage, which at this point I'd have to agree with.

^ I'm kinda on the fence with that one. I know that its a fighters job to go out and win the fight, in the most efficient way possible. But at the end of the day, the general public doesn't want to see a boxing match...they want to see fights. At the end of the day. Its all about entertainment.

Like the Mayweather/De La Hoya fight. That was a superb boxing performance by Mayweather...

Was it entertaining ?

To me, yes. But to everyone else I talked to who is a casual fan...that fight sucked ass. So I don't mind fighters who want to put on a good show.

If it were to happen, I think it would be an exciting match. I think Hatton would come out throwing and tryna hurt Oscar early. And like Thirsty said, Oscar probably thinks he can kill Hatton so might go for the KO early too...

Hatton and 'Nard are both great body punchers, but I don't think you can compare the 2, just based on size/strength. In my eyes, compared to Oscar, Hatton is the better P4P guy, but I have a hard time envisioning him beating Oscar. When they're not training, they may walk around at the same weight, but Oscar's isn't from massive amounts of Guinness, he's just a much bigger dude.

I respect all that Ricky Hatton has done, but I don't think he's as ''great'' as people say. I may be wrong, but he hasn't convinced me.

Top five in his division? Absolutely.

Best? NO WAY.
I agree with you about Hatton. His best wins at this point include a win over Kostya Tszyu, who was coming off an injury and fought a total of 9 rounds within a year in a half going into the Hatton fight. Then you gotta give him credit for a great win over a battle worn Jose Luis Castillo who showed signs of slowing down in his previous fight against Herman Ngoudjo and had been in many many wars which obviously took a toll on him. He also holds a win over the underrated Luis Collazo who I thought won the fight and he almost had Hatton out of there. The reason why I included the "excuses" along with Ricky's wins is because I think they played a major roll in those fights and I'd pick both (Tszyu/Castillo) guys to beat Ricky if they had met in their primes. Outside of those 3 wins, he really doesn't have anyone of mention on his resume.

One thing I do gotta give it up to Ricky for is making the jump across the pond and wanting to create a legacy for himself by impressing the American boxing community and trying to get the bigger fights, unlike some other Euro belt holders (past and present).

Now about a match with Oscar, I think that Oscar is just way too big and way too strong. Not to compare Ricky Hatton with Arturo Gatti but if Oscar and Ricky were to fight, it's going to be very apparent from the opening bell that Oscar is too big and strong for him. Remember how hard of a time Ricky had trying to cope with Urango's body shots back in January? I can see Oscar hurting him badly to the body and landing some big left hooks upstairs as well. I'd have to go with Oscar stopping Ricky within 6.

Very well said.
