(June 11, 2007) -- This is what I like about the Oakland Raiders' offseason moves: They were realistic in beginning the massive chore of cleaning up the mess they had become as a team. They started where all franchises that have hit rock bottom must start: Quarterback. Making JaMarcus Russell the top overall pick of the draft was a no-brainer (although it still was met with at least mild surprise in many league circles because of the Raiders' tendency to do the unexpected).

The former LSU star might end up starting as a rookie. His incredibly strong arm and remarkable mobility and athleticism for someone who stands 6-foot-5-plus and weighs 256 pounds could allow him to function effectively even as he learns on the job. His poise and fearlessness also would serve him well under such circumstances.
Ideally, however, the Raiders would like to start Josh McCown, whom they acquired in a trade with the Detroit Lions, while Russell watches and learns. McCown has good size (6-3, 223 pounds) and strength to be a decent pocket passer, but also enough mobility to make plays on the move. He could solidly fill the job for all or part of the 2007 season, depending on when the Raiders feel Russell is ready to take over.

The Raiders picked up a talented pass-catching tight end in second-round draft choice Zach Miller, a former Arizona State standout. Miller should have an immediate impact by consistently providing an open target. He has tremendous speed, runs excellent routes, and has reliable hands. Besides working from a conventional tight-end spot, Miller also has enough athleticism and versatility to be used as an H-back or even as a wideout.

Free-agent fullback Justin Griffith, formerly of the Atlanta Falcons, should be a nice pass-catching option out of the backfield.

Oakland's running game should be stronger now that Dominic Rhodes, a free agent from the Indianapolis Colts, will alternate with incumbent starter LaMont Jordan. Rhodes' effective pairing with Joseph Addai played a huge role in the Colts' winning the Super Bowl. The Raiders also have a nice developmental project at running back in fourth-rounder Michael Bush, a former Louisville star who is recovering from a severely broken leg and could end up as the starter in 2008.

One of the Raiders' smarter decisions was signing defensive tackle Terdell Sands to a four-year contract before he could become a free agent. Sands is by far the team's best run-stuffer, although his efforts alone weren't enough to keep the Raiders from ranking near the bottom of the league in rushing defense in '06.

This is what concerns me: When a team is trying to pull itself out of the quagmire of a 2-14 season, almost everything is a concern.

At 31, new coach Lane Kiffin is the youngest head coach in modern NFL history. He has rebuilt most of the coaching staff. Kiffin has changed the offensive scheme and will call his own plays. It sounds like a pretty heavy load for someone whose previous gig was as a college (USC) co-offensive coordinator.

The Raiders could be tempted to rush Russell into action too soon. They will be paying him massive amounts of money, and it is only natural to want to see the quickest possible return on that investment. Given the prolonged sorry state of the team's quarterback position, there won't be much patience if McCown or anyone else not named Russell filling the spot should struggle.

The Raiders still don't know exactly what they have in left offensive tackle Robert Gallery, the second overall pick of the 2004 draft. Although the multiple changes in coaching and schemes have not helped his development, Gallery should have displayed more promise up to this point. It might very well be that he is simply a bust.

Ok decent read now let me give you my 2 cents....PS THIS AINT HATING IT'S MY OPINION

J.R......They had to do it, there is no denying that. While he may very well be the best qb in this years draft, he is not close to being 1 of the best young qb's...Raiders blew thier chance last year. I don't want to call JR a reach but he will not be a factor this year....period!

Zach Miller...ehh good not great, he is an improvemnt from what they had, but I think it is a real stretch for anyone to think he will be a wide open threat all the time. I mean he is playing in the afc west where that is home to some of the fastest linebackers in the whole NFL....he wont be as open as he was in college. but with the lack of a significant upgrade in the o-line he will be called upon alot.

Justin Griiffth...really??? he needs to learn how to block with that o-line before he becomes a pass catching option.

Rhodes...We went through this argument last week no need to re-hash it

Sands...there D was good no doubt, this isn't an earth shattering move, but it wasn't bad either...thier d wasn't a concern so really no need to mention in this article.

Lane...I agree this is a concern, but it sounds like the players are takeing to him well so far..so we'll see

McCown....I think he HAS to be the man, through thick or thin. JR needs time to sit learn and take it all in.

Gallery a bust???????never this is news barely now why?

So again...I will say the Radiers will not be contenders this year, they will not put the fear in very many teams........BUT they will be better, and they will win more than 2 games.

Now for my thoughts on the offseason...

The biggest move the Raiders made, obviously, was drafting QB Jamarcus Russell. It was the only move to be made, and one I support fully. Now, had the Raiders not jumped on overhyped college sensation Michael Huff, and taken Matt Lienert, they would have been 1.) solid at QB, and 2.) in a prime condition to take WR Calvin Johnson in this year's draft. But, unfortunately, somebody, whether it be Art Shell, Al Davis, or Ronald McDonald had a brain fart, and passed on what is turning out to be a pretty solid QB in Lienert.

Again, I support Jamarcus Russell, and believe he can do good things in this league. I only hope McCown is able to fill in for at least this season, and make a good contribution, so Jamarcus is able to learn the system, adapt to the speed of the NFL, and develop his skills further.

My personal favorite pick ups of the offseason, though, were at the RB position. I like the addition of Dominic Rhoades. I believe he has what it takes to be a very good back, and shouldn't have any problems being the number one back.

Now, if this was one year ago, or if Michael Bush (steal in the 4th) hadn't broken his leg, he would have been a top-ten pick, easily. Strong, versatile, intelligent...he's what you want in a RB. Unfortunately, or fortunately for us, depending on how you look at it, the severely broken leg he had could curtail what could have been a tremendous career, but I don't think it should be a factor. I believe he's healed, and judging by some of his workouts, looks ready to play. I look forward to watching this kid play.

Which brings me to the biggest obstacle in the way of the RB's of the Raiders...and no, it's not the 'speed' of the LB's in the AFC West: our O-Line. Horrendous last year. They couldn't block Britney from showing her cum hole. I don't blame coaching. I don't blame schemes. I don't blame other team's D-Lines. I blame the PLAYERS. These are professionals. This is thier job. You may have different blocking schemes, but all in all, you are still just blocking! The coaches didn't ask them to block with 1 hand stuffed in thier jockstraps, so I don't know what to say, other than that you can sum it all up in one line: Robert Gallery is a bust. The rest? Not much better...and seeing that the Raiders did little (if anything) to address the problem...hopefully these knuckleheads will be better this year.

The defecting of Randy Moss to the Patriots was a good move, because, for obvious reasons, Moss was not ''happy'' in Oakland anymore, and to show he wasn't ''happy'' in Oakland, he decided he wasn't going to play hard, finish routes, and give any kind of an effort. So, while I like Moss, I just don't like him on my team. Let him take his temper tantrums, bad attitude, and his blanky elsewhere.

Mike Williams...gee, what to say? GREAT college player, and should have been a solid NFL player. What happened? The NFL happened to him. I think he's been overwhelmed, and for whatever reasons, hasn't responded well. I still think he can be a very good number 2 or 3 reciever, and hope he's excited about being around this cast of potentially good offensive players (excluding the O-Line...LOL).

When it comes to new TE Zach Miller, I think he's a good fit for the Raiders. He runs great routes, has good, strong hands, and is an extremely hard worker. I watched him play at the college level, and was impressed. I think for this kid, the sky's the limit. His only negative...that goddamn O-Line, again. If he has to stay on the line, helping to block 90% of the time, that'll curtail any success he might have as a TE.

As far as the Defense, not a lot of moves were made. The signing of Terdell Sands was a solid move, and the only thing I can really say about the defense is to KEEP DERRICK BURGESS HAPPY. Enough said...

Lane Kiffen...man, I don't even know what to think. Part of me is optimistic, excited, and really looking forward to him coach. I think his enthusiasm, intelligence, and love for the game is exciting, and could lead to good things. The only problem with that is that I have great enthusiasm, intelligence, and love for the game, but that doesn't make ME a head coach in the NFL. Those things alone won't get it done, and I only hope he isn't overwhelmed at such a young age (31, I believe) that he loses focus and doesn't live up to his potential. In my opinion, I think he'll be just fine. His poise has been great, and I think he's going to surprise a few people.

All in all...the offseason has been an 'entertaining' one...and here's what we know:

1.) Our QB can throw farther than yours from his knee
2.) Randy Moss needed some wet wipes, go get your wet wipes, d-d-d-d-d damn!
3.) Our coach might date your sister
4.) Robert Gallery is a bust. (OH MY!)
5.) The Raiders will win more than 2 games this year (I'm taking 6-7...hopefully more)
6.) Super Bowl, here we come! (Me and my family, not my team)

To wrap things up, I'm looking forward to the season. I'm excited about my team. I think the Raiders are going to be MUCH improved. I think the key is allowing Russell to observe and learn before throwing him in, and the O-Line has to be consistant. Those 2 things...and it should make for an interesting year.

I think Kiffin will do good considering the fact that his dad Monte Kiffin has been a great defensive coordinator for the TB Bucs. So we know they've had discussions about NFL type coverages. His dad may have given a few tips here and there.
