Gary Peterson: Raiders' QB could be a revolving door
By Gary Peterson

Bay Area News Group

On the bright side, Jason Campbell's first home game as an Oakland Raider was a real crowd-pleaser.

Before the first half of Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams was over, Campbell's new fans were not-so-kindly requesting the presence of his backup. Before the second half was over, they were hailing that backup, Bruce Gradkowski, as a folk hero.

"Of course it's disappointing," said Campbell, who was acquired from the Washington Redskins during the offseason for a 2012 fourth-round draft pick. "But at the same time, I didn't want to be a distraction to the team. It's bigger than me. It's not about me, it's about the team."

That team looked sluggish in the first half, lugging a 7-3 deficit into the intermission. That team looked reborn in the second half, outscoring, outgaining, outplaying and outhitting the woebegone Rams en route to a 16-14 victory.

It would be simplistic to pin the turnaround solely on coach Tom Cable's decision to replace Campbell with Gradkowski. But you couldn't deny the difference in the bottom line.

Under Campbell, the Raiders gained 130 yards on six first-half possessions. Their first drive died on downs at the St. Louis 6-yard line. The second ended on a missed field goal attempt. The next two ended with punts. The fifth netted a field goal and the sixth ended when Campbell's overthrow of Louis Murphy was intercepted.

Campbell's afternoon ended as well.

"Yeah, I was surprised," he said after completing eight of 15 passes for 87 yards and fumbling twice. "We were down 7-3. We had been moving the ball. We just stalled when we got to the red zone."

Gradkowski led the Raiders to a field goal on their first drive of the second half, and a touchdown on their second. He finished 11 of 22 for 162 yards, one touchdown and one interception (on a pass tipped at the line of scrimmage). He was more mobile, more fluid and seemed to have a better feel for when the pass rush was closing in.

"That's just him," Cable said. "That's his personality. That's the way he is every day. He just loves to get after it and go for it."

Campbell is going for a career rebirth in Oakland after four more-down-than-up seasons with the Redskins. Before Sunday, you had to like his chances. He was replacing JaMarcus Russell, the lowest bar that ever was. In training camp, team owner Al Davis compared him to Jim Plunkett.

Then there he was, watching the Raiders' merry second half rally from a spot on the sideline. He couldn't be happy personally, but he couldn't openly display his displeasure.

"Like I told Bruce," he said, "I said, 'This is a business.' It's nothing personal."

Someone asked him if he thought he'd start next week's game at Arizona, but that can't possibly be a question. Gradkowski was too good Sunday, too dynamic. That's not to be confused with nominating a guy for the Hall of Fame, or even the Week 3 starter. And yes, the Rams have now lost 27 of their past 28 games.

Then again, this was the Raiders' first win in a home opener since 2004. They're in no position to mess with a winning streak, even if it is one in a row.

"I'll worry about all that tomorrow," Cable said, charitably, when asked about next week's starting quarterback. "Today was about winning this game."

"I don't know what decisions have been made," Campbell said quietly in a noisy postgame locker room. "My job is to come to work Monday and just work out and do what I have to do each and every week."

Don't worry, he gets it. He knows there's a great chance that Cable hasn't made his last quarterback switch of the season. Having been here a whole two months, he likely knows that Davis' voice will be heard at some point, and perhaps already has.

On the other hand, who expects to make a first impression in the new home town by having a teammate become a hero at your expense?

"It's not what he had planned," cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha said. "You do feel for him, but he's a fighter, he's a winner, and we don't know what's going to happen next. Just talking to him, he knows that it's a long season and anything can happen."

And already has.

DAMN IT DOESN'T LOOK GOOD FOR JC ALREADY, I DONT CARE WHO IS OUR QB AS LONG AS WE WIN GAMES......BUT BRUCE DEF LOOKS BETTER, LET'S SEE IF AL KEEPS HIM IN THERE...

Gang-tackling stuffed Jackson
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, September 20th, 2010 at 1:00 pm in Oakland Raiders.

To hear the Raiders tell it, shutting down the Rams’ Steven Jackson Sunday had more to do with secruity in numbers than it did any dramatic difference in philosophy or scheme.

Former Raiders defensive coordinator Willie Shaw, when asked about the problems of one-on-one tackling, said the best way to fix it is avoid one-on-one tackles. Get as many players to the ball as possible so if one player gets missed, another follows up.

It was never more evident than in last week’s 76-yard run by Chris Johnson. Tyvon Branch was the lone player with a chance to get one of the league’s best backs, Johnson made him miss, and the Titans had a touchdown.

Jackson has a different style and is tough to bring down with a solo tackle for a different reason.

“He’s big, so he’s going to knock the first guy right off,” Raiders defensive tackle John Henderson said Monday. “You have to make sure everybody’s around him, and that’s what we did. I think we did a great job of that.”

Jackson had eight carries for 56 yards in the first quarter but only 11 carries for 19 yards in the second, third and fourth quarters.

Strong side linebacker Kamerion Wimbley thought the defense fed off the success the offense and special teams was having.

“There were some big plays on offense, big plays on special teams, that helped ignite the defense,” Wimbley said. “We always wanted to focus on swarming the ball, especially with a back as talented as Steven Jackson. You have to put more than one hat on him.

“We just went in and made our halftime adjustments. We saw some things we were doing that was hurting us in the first half and once we made those corrections, I think it put is in a better postion to make plays in the second half.”

No determination on QB
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, September 20th, 2010 at 2:48 pm in Oakland Raiders.

A few quick hits after Tom Cable’s Monday press briefing, with a more comprehensive look at news and notes to come later:

– Cable did not make public a starting quarterback for Sunday’s game in Arizona, saying he had a good idea which direction what he was going to do. He said there will not be a “controversy.”

When asked if the call was his alone, Cable said, “It has to be,” and he stressed the fact that quarterback depth is better than it’s been for some time on the Raiders and that regardless of which quarterback is chosen, the other could still be needed down the road.

– For what it’s worth, on the failed fourth-and-1 call at the St. Louis 6, he was trying to call time out because the Raiders were in the wrong formation but officials did not see him. When asked if the quarterback (Campbell) should have seen that it was the wrong formation and called time, Cable said yes, he should have.

– The tackle rotation of Mario Henderson and Jared Veldheer will continue for at least another week. Cable said he’d ideally like to have a standard five man line, but in this situation, a rotation system brings up the level of both players.

– No decision has been made on the status of Luke Lawton, whose two whose suspension is up this week. He said its an administrative issue that will be dealt with in the next day or so.

– Cable’s biggest issues are with cleaning up red zone offense, penalties _ particularly those of the pre-snap variety _ and turnovers.

More to come . . .
