The Carolina Panthers have finalized a long-term contract with tackle Jordan Gross.

According to Darin Gantt of the Rock Hill Herald, the deal is done.

Gantt’s source is Gross himself, who said, “We’re done.”

As expected, the Carolina Panthers have slapped the franchise tag onto defensive end Julius Peppers, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.

The move comes not long after the team worked out a long-term deal with tackle Jordan Gross.

The question now becomes whether the Panthers trade Peppers, or whether they keep him for another year, at a salary of $16.683 million.

Peppers has said he wants to go to a new team, but his options are limited absent a trade. He can decline to accept the tender, which would allow him to stay away from all offseason activities, training camp, and the preseason. Then, he could sign the tender on the eve of the regular season, and still receive the full $16.683 million.

Of course, the Panthers could withdraw the tender at any time before he signs it, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Peppers also could sit out through Week Ten, sign the tender, receive $6.87 million for the last seven weeks of the season, and become a free agent again in 2010.

Next year, it would cost the Panthers $20.01 million to use the franchise tag on Peppers.

The deal between the Raiders and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is nearly done.

Per Jim Trotter of SI.com, the contract is in the hands of the NFL’s Management Council, which reviews every contract for approval.

Trotter reports that Asomugha will receive $26 million in guaranteed money over the first two years of the deal, which approximates the money he’d receive under the franchise tag for this season and next.

Asomugha lands complex three-year deal with Raiders

For a change, the Oakland Raiders intercepted CB Nnamdi Asomugha on his way to the free-agent market.

Asomugha signed a three-year deal that is worth a minimum of $45 million and could reach $50 million, a league source said.

It’s a complex contract that the NFL had to sift through and approve, and it has. The deal works like this:

The first two years, worth $28.5 million, are fully guaranteed. In the third year of the contract, if Oakland wants to keep Asomugha, it must pay him the average of the top five highest-paid quarterbacks (not to be confused with cornerbacks) or $16.875 million — whichever is greater. If the Raiders fail to pick up the option, Asomugha will become a free agent, with Oakland not having the ability to tag him again.

It’s a complex deal, but the bottom line is it’s done. The Raiders kept Asomugha and punter Shane Lechler without having to use a franchise tag.

Redskins coach Jim Zorn says that the team will be active in free agency.

They’ve created some cap room for the coming spending spree by cutting linebacker Marcus Washington, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.

The move frees up $4.5 million in cap space — which will allow the team to make a big splash with another big name who’ll eventually be cut a few years from now to make room for the next big name with which they hope to make a big splash.

Last year, tight end Chris Baker became the third veteran player on the Jets’ roster to complain that the front office had lied to him about re-doing his contract.

We hope that they didn’t also tell him he wouldn’t be cut.

Per Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com, the Jets will be releasing Baker in advance of a March 5 trigger that would have resulted in guaranteed pay of $9 million over the next three years.
