MONTA ELLIS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE (((EXPECTED TO RETURN MID DECEMBER)))

Monta Ellis finally addressed his controversial mo-ped accident Monday by releasing a statement through his agent, Jeff Fried. It is the first public comment from Ellis regarding the accident that left him in need of surgery on his left ankle and sidelined for the first two months of the season.

The 22-year-old Ellis, who crashed his mo-ped in late August, initially told Golden State Warriors vice president Chris Mullin that he injured himself playing pickup basketball. Nearly a month later, Ellis, who had signed a six-year, $66 million contract extension weeks before the accident, revealed the true cause of his injury.

Riding mo-peds violates the league's uniform player contract, and the Warriors responded to Ellis' revelation by suspending him for 30 games without pay. The suspension will cost Ellis $3 million. The Players Association and Fried are preparing to file an appeal next week.

"While management and I do not agree on their actions," Ellis said in the statement, which was addressed to "My Community, Friends and Fans," "I want to be clear that my injury is based on my mistake in judgment. And I always accept responsibility for my actions."

Mullin and Warriors coach Don Nelson disagreed with the harshness of the penalty, which was levied by team owner Chris Cohan and team president Robert Rowell.

Ellis, who sustained a torn ligament and high-ankle sprain in the accident, is currently rehabbing at the Warriors' practice facility in Oakland. Fried said he is ahead of schedule and that he is expected to return to the court in mid-December. The Warriors' six preseason games count toward Ellis' 30-game suspension, so if the penalty is upheld, he will be eligible to play on Dec. 15th in a home game against Orlando.

"I am working hard to get back on the court and help my teammates and coaches win many games and recreate the playoff atmosphere of 2007," Ellis, who averaged 20.2 points last season, said in the statement. "We were as excited on the court as the fans in the stands."

At Sunday's open practice, Ellis received a standing ovation from the 5,000 fans at ORACLE Arena. The crowd's response moved Ellis.

"The Bay area has become home to me and I love everything about this community," Ellis said. "I see the kids wearing Number 8 in the arena and around the Bay area and it always brings a big smile to my face and a sense of pride and responsibility."

hopefully he returns to AT LEAST 85% of what he was last season. anything above that would be great. cant wait.

Two NBA sources, both close to the Warriors veteran forward, told me that Al Harrington recently informed the Warriors that he does not want to play for Don Nelson any more and is requesting to be traded as soon as possible.

(There is no suggestion, however, that Harrington will walk out from the team if he isn’t traded before the start of the season tomorrow.)

In fact, one league source with knowledge of the situation said that Harrington’s agent, Dan Fegan, is “actively working to get (Harrington) out of there” and that a few teams already have proposed tentative deals.

AL HARRINGTON TRADE RUMOR = FALSE

For a guy who wants to be traded, Warriors forward Al Harrington sure sounded surprised about wanting to be traded.

Contacted by 48minutes.net Tuesday afternoon, Harrington and Don Nelson both denied the hours-old report from Tim Kawakami that the 10th-year forward has asked to be shipped to another destination, no longer willing to play for the NBA’s second-winningest coach.

“I haven’t said that to anybody,” Harrington said. “I’m being honest with you.”

“Not that I know of,” Nelson said. “I had a meeting with him yesterday, and it didn’t come up.”

damn, the Warriors are really falling appart. i like Harrington but if we can get a good trade...im sure alot of fans wont mind him leaving. who's available out there for a trade?

shit, im having doubts now. seems like the Warriors front office is destroying this team. if the Al Harrington trade happens (which im sure we will be losing 2-3 players all together) then i dont think we will have a good enough team to compete out here in the west. that all really depends on who the Warriors get in return for the trade.

Looks Like Al Does Want Out

GOT THIS FROM SFGATE

The Warriors forward confirmed late Tuesday that he and his agent, Dan Fegan, met earlier with vice president Chris Mullin to reiterate Harrington's unhappiness playing for coach Don Nelson and his desire to be moved.

"If you ask me if I want to be traded, I've been wanting to be traded since the end of last season," Harrington said. "With everything that happened in the summer and coming into training camp, I was hoping things were going to work out between me and Nellie, but I don't think that's going to happen.

"It is what it is. That's being all the way honest. That's putting it out there. Do I think that Al might have to be traded? Do I think it's going to work with me and Nellie? I don't think so. That's how I feel."

Harrington has never made it a secret that he felt underutilized and often out of position in Nelson's system, but the forward/center always did what was asked, and, until now, kept his major grievances in-house.

An emotional Harrington explained Tuesday that he didn't want to be a distraction to the team and had hoped his rocky relationship with Nelson would be different this year. But preseason maneuvering by Nelson - who is about to re-sign for another two seasons - has Harrington doubting the outcome.

He played just 17 minutes in the Warriors' exhibition finale, a game Nelson said he'd coach as if it were the regular season. Just prior to that, Nelson announced that he'd made Harrington a team captain, a title he gave to Stephen Jackson and Andris Biedrins at the start of training camp.

It's a move Harrington questions the sincerity and timing off, given its ability to reflect poorly on him if a trade request became public.

Now that it is, resolving Harrington's future is the latest challenge facing the Warriors' fractured front office. Suspended guard Monta Ellis, who was essentially fined $3 million for his moped accident, is expected to file a grievance over Golden State's handling of his punishment within the week.

Warriors arent gonna be that bad...but then again they arent gonna be that good. with Monta still out and the possible Al trade...this team is not even ready to start the season correctly. but when Monta comes back and when the players start to gel as a team later in the year then ill be happy to make that bet against you.

Rowell’s dealings with Stephen Jackson negated Warriors’ chances at Tayshaun Prince

Posted by Tim Kawakami on October 29th, 2008 at 10:41 am | Categorized as NBA, Warriors

* I guess I have to do this now, since there will probably be at least one website trying to debunk this report. 1) Certainly there is no expectation on my part that any Piston or Warriors officials will publicly confirm SJax-for-Prince discussions. THEY NEVER DO THAT ON CLOSE-BUT-NO-CIGAR DEALS. It’s bad for business. 2) So there will be debunkings attempted as soon as those denials happen. I’m OK with that. I was OK with it yesterday. When you’re 100% on your reporting, it’s all good.

It’s coming fast and furious now, from all over the league, as executives and other sources check in with me, asking one question: What are the Warriors doing?

By the way, the Al Harrington trade request isn’t a major headline for them–people around the NBA have known about Al’s problems with Don Nelson for years and once Nelson was re-upped expected a trade-demand and a trade fairly quickly, unless somebody with the Warriors gets stubborn.

For league people, the true big continuing and confounding Warriors issues:

1) The Monta Ellis Situation, which, as I noted on KNBR this morning, looks like it’s heading towards a very ugly place, which might have been inevitable. The problem: Why is it going on and on?

Other-team execs note that the Warriors are in a tough spot on this one–several are OK with Robert Rowell’s hardline stance for fiscal protection but some believe that the Warriors’ decision to maintain the option to void the deal AFTER suspending Ellis is setting up a frigid atmosphere for future player relations.

More importantly, It’s the prolonged nature off the stand-off–and where it could be headed (grievance, hearings, possible voiding or trade demand) that has most in the NBA shaking their heads.

2) Rowell’s personal intervention to make sure Stephen Jackson gets his maximum contract extension, even though SJax still had two years left on his deal and is 30 now.

The Jackson thing gets weirder and weirder: I’ve heard from three NBA sources that Chris Mullin and Pistons boss Joe Dumars had continuing, open-ended discussions about a possible deal that would’ve focused on SJax moving to Detroit and Tayshaun Prince coming to the Warriors.

(Side editorial note: TAYSHAUN PRINCE? One of the 25 best, most versatile players in the league? Who is two years younger than SJax? Nothing against SJax and what he means to this team… but… Tayshaun?)

To be clear: There was no agreement. No papers being drawn up. Just talks. Interested, directed talks. That doesn’t seem like a fair deal (for Detroit), so there would’ve had to be other players or picks involved.

But Dumars is still looking to change up the Pistons’ chemistry and Prince has three years and $30M left on his deal, so moving him for SJax’s two years and $15M would free up some future cash. (Bringing SJax back to the Palace at Auburn Hills would be… interesting.)

The two sides started talking last summer and agreed to keep talking up to February 2009 trade deadline, if nothing else occurred.

Guess what happened: Rowell had dinner with SJax and told him that they’d do a deal, somewhere around SJax’s max allowable–three years and $27M, stretching through 2012-’13. That deal is expected to be announced at any time now and SJax has made sure of it by talking about it publicly. (VERY smart, Stephen.)

Dumars, of course, wants no part of SJax for that kind of contract. Nobody in the league, other than the Warriors, wants him signed at that kind of money into his mid-30s. He’s a very good–but not a great–player. He had two years left on his deal. There was time.

But Rowell wanted him for the long-term. Rowell’s call. He’s the man. There are repercussions, however.

The relatively short-term length of SJax’s deal, plus his obvious strengths as a defender and clutch shooter, made him an asset on the trade market.

He had great value to the Warriors and also good value to other teams, looking for a missing piece.

Not any more.

The new deal means the only team desperate enough to pay him now is the Warriors, who get to keep him for more money than anybody else would’ve paid him, precisely when the Warriors were the only team who could negotiate with him.

Wow. That gets people around the league buzzing and wondering and asking: WHAT ARE THE WARRIORS THINKING?
