School officials and police in Union City are trying to determine the source of brownies that were laced with a substance that sickened five high school students.
The students at James Logan High School reported feeling ill late last week after eating brownies that they had believed contained marijuana, said New Haven Unified School District spokesman Rick La Plante.
The brownies may have contained another substance in addition to or instead of marijuana, but exactly what was in them wasn't known, authorities said.
"No substance has been identified, and we have no idea ... who provided or purchased the brownies," said police Lt. Ben Horner.
Two boys, a senior and a sophomore, suffered convulsions after eating the brownies and had to go to the hospital, La Plante said. Both have since recovered.
They and the three other students - a girl in her freshman year, a second sophomore boy and a boy in his junior year - could face disciplinary action, La Plante said.
It was not known whether the students obtained the brownies at school or somewhere else, La Plante said.
The district sent a phone message about the tainted brownies to parents Friday, saying only that the baked goods were "laced with ingredients that have caused the students to become under the influence and/or painfully sick."
A boy at Cesar Chavez Middle School in Union City also showed signs last week of being under the influence, La Plante said. However, officials determined that his mother had bought a brownie from a medical cannabis club and shared it with her son.
The incident was unrelated to the sickenings at James Logan, La Plante said.
