Camaro Driver Killed In Hercules Street Race Crash
(7/9/2009)
A man killed in a crash during what police said was a street race has been identified as a San Francisco sheriff's deputy, officials said Friday.

Hercules police said Christopher Walker 23, of Antioch, was killed Wednesday afternoon when he lost control of his red Chevrolet Camaro and it crashed into a power pole on Palm Avenue, between Sycamore Avenue and the state Highway 4 on-ramp.

San Francisco Sheriff's Department Chief of Staff Eileen Hirst said Walker provided security at San Francisco General Hospital. He had worked as a deputy for the department for two years.

Hirst said Walker was a third-generation deputy sheriff, whose mother is a sheriff's lieutenant and grandfather was a former lieutenant.

Walker left behind "many friends in the sheriff's department," said Hirst. "He was a very well-liked deputy and a very good deputy," she said. His family was planning a private memorial service.

Hirst said it was not known why Walker may have been involved in a street race.

"There's very little that we know at this point," Hirst said.

Investigators believe Walker was racing a newer model sedan with paper dealer license plates at the time of the crash. The silver Nissan Sentra left the scene.

"We do have one witness that was able to provide the description of the Nissan Sentra, and was able to say that they were speeding," Hercules police spokeswoman Michelle Harrington said.

Hercules police were seeking information from any additional witnesses, asking them to call police at (510) 724-1111.
