The 49ers have waived four-year veteran cornerback Sammy Davis.

San Francisco acquired Davis via trade with San Diego for Rashaun Woods last spring. The former first-round draft pick started one game this year before being placed on injured reserve in December after suffering a quadriceps injury against the Packers.

Davis finished the season with 30 tackles and 8 passes defensed.

Pro Bowl cornerback Walt Harris had a screw placed in his broken hand, an injury sustained during the Pro Bowl. The surgery will speed up Harris’ recovery as the veteran is expected to participate in the team’s mini camp following the 2007 NFL Draft.

Trouble's in the pipeline for 49ers' move

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/02/26/MNG8FOB6S41.DTL

A big hurdle has popped up in the path of the 49ers' plans to move down to Santa Clara -- a portion of the land where the team hopes to build its $800 million stadium turns out to be owned by the city of San Francisco.

The revelation raises the possibility that officials in San Francisco, who fumed when the Niners abruptly announced their intention in November to move to the South Bay, could have some unexpected muscle to flex in dealing with team owner John York.

San Francisco's land is just 80 feet wide, but it runs across the entire 20-acre parcel east of Highway 101 where the 49ers want to build, and not far from where the stadium's southern end zone would be located.

The 4-acre ribbon of territory, on the site's southern edge just opposite the Great America amusement park, is where a pipeline carrying water from the Sierra to 2.4 million Bay Area customers is buried. The pipe, part of the Hetch Hetchy system, is owned by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.

The significance of the pipeline went largely unnoticed until The Chronicle started asking questions at San Francisco City Hall, where officials then pulled up maps showing the pipe's pathway across the stadium site.

The land is now used for parking for Great America, which hopes to partner with the 49ers to build the stadium. The amusement park's owners had a five-year lease for the PUC land but allowed it to expire in 2004. Now they have a month-to-month deal, meaning San Francisco could terminate the agreement at any time.

Great America pays $100,000 a year for the property, and any long-term lease renewal could require approval from San Francisco's Board of Supervisors. Given the 49ers' interest in the site, the price tag could certainly be much higher.

The PUC pipe could cause other headaches for the team. Susan Leal, the agency's general manager, said the pipes are scheduled to be dug up and replaced starting in 2009 or 2010 as part of the Hetch Hetchy system overhaul -- with the work stretching two or three years. That would mean running up against the Niners' self-imposed 2012 deadline for the stadium's first kickoff.

Asked whether the pipeline presents problems for the team's stadium plans, Leal said, "I think that's a question for them.''

Niners spokeswoman Lisa Lang downplayed the importance of the disclosure, saying team executives are "well aware of the Hetch Hetchy right-of-way issues, and it's on a list of all the issues that need to be addressed."

"But it's way down at the bottom of the list and isn't something we will be exploring for quite some time,'' she said.

Publicly, San Francisco officials are going out of their way not to antagonize the team, hoping the 49ers can still be persuaded to buy into a stadium site at the old Hunters Point Naval Shipyard near Candlestick Point.

"We are not focused on the situation surrounding the Santa Clara site at all," said Peter Ragone, spokesman for Mayor Gavin Newsom. "We have a strong working relationship with Dr. York and believe we've got a great plan for San Francisco, and that is all we are focused on.''

But one official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the negotiations with the team, called the pipeline revelation "unbelievable leverage for us. It's quite remarkable.''

Lang says the 49ers' more immediate concern is figuring out how to pay for the 68,000-seat stadium, including determining whether concerts and other off-season events could be held there. The Niners are also trying to determine the cost of providing security and cleaning services for all the private parking they hope to secure around the stadium.

The pipeline isn't the only problem for the 49ers. Last week, it was revealed that the team might have to spend a bundle to move a $30 million electrical substation owned by the city to make way for a park greenbelt leading to the stadium.

Santa Clara Assistant City Manager Ron Garratt, who is overseeing the stadium negotiations, said every project has its challenges -- and the Hetch Hetchy pipeline and the substation are just two more issues to be overcome.

"I'm sure more issues will pop up," Garratt said. "It's a big construction project.''

Cool. That would be a gay ass spot for it anyways. Between Great America and the stadium...it would probably be just as bad as getting out of the park at The Stick.

49ers Tender Contract Offers

http://sf49ers.com/pressbox/news_detail.php?PRKey=2863&section=PR News

The San Francisco 49ers announced Tuesday that they have tendered contract offers to restricted free agents P Andy Lee, and RB Maurice Hicks as well as exclusive rights free agent G Tony Wragge.

Restricted free agents are players who have completed three accrued seasons of service and whose contracts have expired. They have received qualifying offers from their old clubs and will be free to negotiate with any club until April 27, at which time their rights will revert to their original club. If a player accepts an offer from a new club, the old club will have the right to match the offer and retain the player. If the old club elects not to match the offer, that club may receive draft-choice compensation depending on the level of the qualifying offer made to the player.

Exclusive rights free agents are players with two or fewer years of experience who have no outside negotiating power. His rights belong to his 2006 club, provided that club makes him a minimum qualifying offer, which varies based on tenure. An EFA player may not speak with other teams, and has no other NFL options open to him other than dealing with his previous club.

In other news, special assistant to the head coach Robert Talley has left the 49ers to become the head coach at Stonehill College in Massachusetts.

Linebacker Derek Smith had surgery to repair his eye muscle. He will be held out of contact until the preseason.

You know, about the whole Santa Clara thing.

I was thinking...if San Francisco's only offer for a site is that garbage ass ( literally ) landfill ghetto ass Hunter's Point spot...then they don't deserve to keep the team IMO. The Giants get a picturesque spot right in the heart of the Embarcadero, on the water, overlooking the Bay and skyline of SF...I understand that The Giants funded their own project...

But you'd think that we'd have a little more admiration for..

The 5 Time World Champion San Francisco 49ers...but nope...they get a landfill in the ghetto.

^ I was kinda opposed to them moving to Santa Clara, but like I said, if that garbo ass Naval Shipyard landfill bullshit in the ghetto is all The City is willing to offer to its 5 Time World Champion team, then they don't deserve to keep this team in SF. Just my .02

If we end up losin Antonio Bryant like they say we are we definately need to sign Done Stallworth. Keep Arnaz Battle as our #2, then bring in Eric Moulds since he just got released from the Texans. He wouldn't be bad as our #3, or even give Ashlie Leile a shot at #3 I'm sure he won't cost that much money. Then again I could be wrong bout that, no price would suprise me these days.

49ers Re-sign DE Young

http://49ers.com/pressbox/news_detail.php?PRKey=2875&section=PR News

After 13 seasons, Bryant Young still believes he has something left to offer the NFL. He also believes the 49ers are on the cusp of doing something special, and after meshing those two beliefs together, Young opted to ink a one-year extension with San Francisco.

“A lot of it was where we were as a team,” said Young. “I feel like we’re on the verge of being right there. I felt like we left some on the table last year and with the addition of a few more pieces to the puzzle we’ll be right there in the mix. I just wanted to be a part of it and finish my work.”

Young is the last player remaining from the 1995 roster when the team brought home its last Lombardi Trophy. After enduring a few tumultuous seasons, he plans to go out with his team back on top.

“I’d like to leave the organization the way I found it,” said Young who was drafted by the 49ers in the first round in 1994. “I really want to give back to what this team has given me – being a mentor to young guys and benefiting someone else by telling them about the ins and outs of how to survive in the league.”

Young has not only survived, he’s thrived – even late in his career. The esteemed linemen started all 16 games for the seventh time in his career and finished with 60 total tackles and 5.5 sacks this past season. He was also named an alternate to the 2006 Pro Bowl.

He also won the Len Eshmont Award, the team’s most prestigious award for the seventh time. The award is given to the player who best exemplifies the inspirational and courageous play of Len Eshmont, an original member of the 1946 49ers team. Eshmont, who coached at Navy and Virginia following his career in San Francisco, died in 1957.

Over his career, he’s enjoyed four trips to the Pro Bowl and amassed 83 sacks to currently rank third on the all-time sack leaders in team history.

Having him back for the 2007 campaign gives the 49ers an experienced and talented defender, and a phenomenal locker room presence.

“We are excited about retaining Bryant as member of the 49ers team,” said head coach Mike Nolan. “We were diligent in our efforts to retain Bryant as a member of the San Francisco 49ers and we are pleased that we were able to reach an agreement that reflects his value to the team while addressing future needs of the club. He is the definition of a leader and helps show the young players what it is supposed to look like.”

Young admitted that he did contemplate and discuss retirement with his family, but eventually decided that his body is still able and his mind is more than willing.

“There’s a lot of room and work that needs to be done, a huge number of things in the locker room that I’d like to accomplish as well as on the field,” said Young. “There are still things that I’d like to do.”

Young does however expect his role on the field to be reduced somewhat in his 14th campaign.

“When I hear that I think it’s me not playing 85-90 snaps a game and instead taking advantage of personnel that we will have, and keeping guys fresh,” said Young. “By doing that, I think you get a lot more out of each person who is in there. I welcome that because everybody has a role to play and I realize I can’t do it all by myself.”

With free agency kicking off tonight at 9PM PST Young doesn’t mind taking on one immediate role, and that’s serving as an advocate for his franchise.

“I’d be happy to talk to anybody who wants to get a feel for what is going on in the organization,” said Young. “For anybody who is considering coming to the 49ers, it’s a great place to be and they’ll be involved with a team right there in the mix. I think it would be in the best interest of any free agent to be part of it because I think something special is going to happen here. I believe that.”
