I have always opted for gangster rap mainly because the production was 10x better than the backpacker trash. Also the preachy lyrics are typically annoying as fuck.
HOWEVER, this past year I have been extremely impressed with the production of Sabzi, the beat making side to the Blue Scholars. He's got a little mix of soul, brass and even a little bit of adrenaline thrown in there too. So I bought an album the other day called "Common Market" because I saw he was on the prouction credits. Just like with the Blue Scholars, he hasn't disappointed me with this album.
Sabzi deserves to be mentioned in the conversation for best producer in the Northwest.
